Driving across the Snake Pass - speed limit 50mph - earlier today I found myself joining a procession of cars following a Honda Jazz which appeared to be in convoy with a Kia something or other travelling at 27mph with occasional surges to 29mph.

There were about 8 cars ahead of me and an increasing number behind.

Between Sheffield and Glossop there are two straight bit where its possible to overtake comfortably but guess what there was a bloody "safety" camera van parked up in each which meant nobody would.

It didnt help that the 2 coffin dodgers at the front were driving so closely that any manoeuvre would have been a multiple overtake which certainly isnt my choice and so the procession kept its shape all the way over the bloody moors.

Well it mostly kept its shape apart from Audi boy overcome with red mist who went for a courageous and fairly stupid 5 car overtake approaching one of the many blind bends.

The irony isnt lost on me that the sodding camera vans stopped any overtaking on the only safe bits of road leading to road rage and frustration further across the moors.

But its safety innit??

I'd blame poor driving, not cameras.

Poor driving and maybe an unnecesarily low speed limit in partnership with safety cameras,

Same with the Cat 'n' Fiddle road (A537/A54 between Macclesfield and Buxton), a lovely road with a nice mix of straights and bends. Trouble is, it's a 50 limit all the way long, and policed by average speed cameras, and the straight sections which are perfect for overtaking often have a camera set just after the beginning, and one set just before the end, in either direction, meaning you shouldn't average more than 50 along the straight bits.

That's okay, except if you're stuck behind someone who drives at 10mph through the twisty bits, and comfort brakes everywhere, and then speeds up to 50 on the straight section, you really don't have much room to overtake without getting zapped by the safety cameras.

It means I see a fair few people doing questionable overtakes through the twisty bits just to get past the dawdlers
