I am shortly moving to the British Virgin Islands for work reasons. Until 2016, I owned a good Series 3 Landy (SWB petrol) but I foolishly sold that one. Many people on the BVI, where they drive on the left, drive modern LHD SUVs imported from the US or from the nearby US island territories, but I want an old and RHD Landy. Aircon? Irrelevant, as I can take the top off, and even tin topped Landies are OK in heat because the glass is mostly vertical, and the old flappy vent system and open windows are very effective once the thing gets moving.

If anyone knows of a decent SWB Series Landy for sale in the BVI or in any of the other Brit islands in the region, please let me know, ta. I would prefer a 2a or 3, with a petrol engine, Overdrive not needed. Safari roof or soft top a bonus

I add that I may use up a chunk of my relocation payment sticking a UK Landy into a container and shipping it to Tortola, but not if I can find one locally.

Can't help with your search in BVI, but why not fill the container with 2 Land Rovers and sell one when you get there.

I'm sure it would pay for the first one!

And good luck with the move!

Of no use to you whatsoever as it's just outside Lisbon, but it's such a nice old boy I thought it worth an airing.

Crikey! This just happened. I was the only bidder. No Safari roof, but a sun visor.

Bargalicious! That looks very tidy indeed for that money. Hope it's as good as it looks.

I put my '86 90 (i.e., it was the first of the coil sprungs, called a 90 not a Defender, although it is a Defender really - confused yet? biggrin ) through an agreed valuation recently, it's a 3.5 V8 manual, it's all there, MOTd and everything works although it'll never win any beauty prizes, and it came back at £6k.

The seller seems a pleasant bloke. I have a couple of safari roofs on watch list.

This being a very late Series 3, IIRC the engine has more bearings than in the earlier ones, and possibly a different carburettor.

A friend on Facebook asks -

"Will this be a 'Death in paradise'-style Caper where you will be the slightly bemused Englishman* in laughingly inappropriate clothing causes much hilarity amongst the locals as you bumble around lurching from faux pas to disaster before winning the day and sharing sundowners on the beach?"

Pretty much yes, I suppose.

* Irish actually, but I sound like a Brit and dress like a City type.

A friend of mine emigrated to Charleston and now imports Landrovers from the UK.
I can put you in contact if you need some guidance on getting your new purchase in to the region.

I think the latest one is Irish. Will you be getting a glamorous assistant?

Good luck!

I'm presently wishing my life away as a legal aid solicitor in the Grim North.

So fed up with the last six months of cold, dark and rain. Managed to get the motorbike out on Saturday for the first time since October. It's just not good enough.

Thoroughly had enough of this country at the moment.

If you're still a virgin, you could move to the BVI too...

My tuppence worth (as an almost 30 year veteran of Cayman) is that you will find it difficult as a professional to run a car without a/c as your only car in the BVI. The summers are extraordinarily hot and humid and no-one wants their lawyer turning up as a smelly bucket of sweat.

I ran an XK120 in Cayman in the early noughties but as a second car (and it is now back in Europe which is where I have decided my old cars belong).

Things I learnt were that there is a lack of old school mechanics on the Islands, that parts that need to be shipped from the UK mean days and sometimes weeks off the road and that there is an element of rose tinted specs on the part of people who think it is a good idea to run a classic.

If you do bring your new (to you) Land Rover out to the BVI my advice is to spend some decent money having someone who knows them go through (absolutely) everything and to stick in an a/c unit. Your transport and duty costs to import will be over 10k if you are to bring out the car on the Ebay link on a previous post but you probably know that already - ie approx three times your purchase price. In your position I would be looking at a late model Defender with a/c.

Good luck!

Breadvan? New(ish) cars? Air conditioning?

I don't very think so!
