Don't ask why but I have the urge to revisit my teenage love of skateboarding
I'm in my 40s now and feel a bit daft about it but there you go

Am I alone in wanting to get back on the maple ?
Am I going to die?
Will it be fun?

Early in the morning at the skatepark, you won't be on your own biggrin Take my younger kids sometimes and there's often 40 somethings on skateboards and BMXs.

I'm more thinking more along the lines of a longboard and hills, Rather than hanging out at skateparks

good to hear there are older folk on boards though

either find a shallow hill...or buy some extensive padding

Am I alone in wanting to get back on the maple ? - from my point of view, Yes.
Am I going to die? - No, but it will feel like you have and take you 10x longer to get over any injuries than when you were a nipper
Will it be fun? - Yes!

I'd love to get in to skateboarding but I was rubbish at it as a kid and have no reason to believe at 36 I'm going to be any better. But I would like to get back in to bmxs which I thoroughly enjoyed as a kid and wish I still had one of my old frames as they are like rocking horse now. The only thing that puts me off is the thought of how I will look on a BMX 20+ years and quite a few pies later.....

I've thought about this, used to skateboard between the ages of 13 and 17 as well as surf.
I'm 31 now, I jumped on a deck a year or two ago of my nieces and could still do an Ollie and an acid drop without failing badly however a kickflip went a bit wrong hehe

I've been thinking more surfing though than skateboarding due to the injury concern! I live near the Gower in south wales so it's not too difficult to restart surfing.

I skated for about 10 years then tailed off into my 20s (33 now) as i got into snowboarding, you can go much bigger and get away with it, and it just ticked more boxes for me.

I still have a setup, maybe go for a skate a couple times a year...i skated at venice beach over christmas which was a bit of a bucket list thing, that was good fun.

I keep saying i'm going to get back into it and skate more regularly again, but it has yet to happen.

Shoulder surgery in august (7 dislocations), so won't be skating again until at least christmas when i'm in LA again.

yes

I still have my last board in the spare room. I can see myself ending up in A&E and frankly I haven't got time for that.

Before worrying about hills and speed, just buy one of these :

https://shop.lushlongboards.com/products/samba/?va...

And get out and have a tonne of fun. Then grab a downhill setup, or a nice pool/slide rig, or a snazzy carbon and cnc alloy slalom/ldp ride...

I'm 55 and I have a skateboard. I'm not as good as I used to be (and I wasn't great even then) and when I do come a cropper I have to lie on the ground for 5 mins recovering instead of jumping straight up. But I enjoy it and although I probably look ridiculous, one of the advantageous of being 55 is that I couldn't give a rat's behind what anyone thinks. fk 'em.

There are a lot of skaters in their 30s/40s/50s now, i don't think anyone takes a second look really.

They do with me, but that's due to looking so damned good...

Oh, and the cute overload cruising along on matching decks with my 11yo.

coincidentally enough, had this pop up on my FB timeline today. Heelflip from 2006-ish.

would be nice to get back to the old level some day, but not sure my knees and ankles can take it. Apparently I live near the oldest indoor skatepark in the UK, should really go check it out at some stage.

One of my friends was a good skater as a teenager.

He started again recently age 30... Fractured his heel shortly after.

Shortly after that his mum was messing around on it with granddaughter and swiftly proceeded to do the same thing!

42 here. Last skated in ~1994.
My two skateboards (Powel Perelta Steve Saiz and Death Box Pete Dossett) are still in my mums garage. Im over there tonight... this thread has got me wondering whether to dig them out. What were the truck rubbers made out of - polyurethane?

Funnily enough my old Rector knee and elbow pads (also almost 30 years old) were brought back into service when I went mountain biking at Bike Park Wales last year. While the foam inside had turned to dust, I figured they would be better than no protection at all...

I got back on a board last year , I'm 50 ish ... and not ridden since they first appeared in 1979 ! I'd been watching the longboarders on Brighton sea front for far too long . Came across a good looking Globe Geminon in my local TK MAX and carefully stood on it whilst holding onto the shelf firmly ...
And that was that , 15 months , 5 boards and a (very) steep relearning curve has inevitability led to me being a grinning owner of one of these bad boys

I wish I'd got back into it years ago , it's such a blast ! I feel so much better both physically & mentally . Now the board (s) are always in the back of my car , ready for a cheaky session . But do buy and always wear a good quality helmet , wrist protectors and elbow/knee pads are recommended as well . Ive had some big off's whilst getting my skating legs back , but its all part of the fun thumbup
