TVR S2 in Toronto

Just been to a friends wedding in Toronto and after picking up the hire car, and dropping the GF off for her wedding "hair do", I was cruising around the discount malls in Missisauga(sp?). What do I spot but a rather nice looking S2 in left hand drive. As there are so few in North America I really didn't expect to see any TVR never mind an S.

I just happened to be wearing my TVRCC T-shirt as well.

I waited for about 10 minutes before the owner returned and we chatted for about 20 minutes. Very nice woman. The car was their 3rd car but she used it as often as possible. I hope she didn't have any frozen food in the shopping . Temp was up into the low 30's and the car was in "Targa" mode.

I pointed her here and at TVR's own site and the TVRCC site. Hope she and her husband have been along to say hello, or will do soon.

They were looking for a way to prove the car was an import so they could bypass the Canadian imissions test. They currently have to play with the setup to get it through.

She also mentioned it ran a bit hot (not surprising with the temps they get in summer) so I suggested the good old manual fan bypass switch that is so popular over here.

Spent the next week hating the Ford Tortuous (Taurus) hire car that was supposed to have a V6 engine but felt like it only had 3 cylinders . Well atleast I could stick it on cruise and try and find something interesting to do, like truck dodging , when on the highways.

Whahey! So if I ever decide to go back home to the Great White North, I will have to find a way to bring Ruby with me so she has a friend to race with!!

I saw an S2 or S3 in metallic blue at the historic GP at Watkins Glen, NY back in '98. (Also saw a MK1 Lotus Cortina and MK1 Escort TC there)

Probably the same one as came to 'Woodwork' in 1999. It won 'best in class', not difficult as it was the only post-1987 TVR there

Glad you got to see another TVR while in North America.
Former North American TVR importer John Wadman sold
a number of the TVR S series through the years and
I can remember 3 or 4 different ones that have attended our annual "Out of the Woodwork" event over
the years. There are quite a few TVRs across Canada
from the Atlantic to Pacific coasts but I have no doubt
it is an infrequent sighting to see many of them on
the roads on a regular basis, as is the case here in the US as well. We hope to see some of our Canadian
neighbors at our "Woodwork" event in a few weeks.

Toronto and area has a fair number of TVRs as TVR North America (CDN) is in Toronto.

I own 2 of them (down to 1 in a few days), know owners of several more - not common, bit you come across them.

With respect to emissions, a car is exempt once it is 20 years old. Speaking with the government agency involved in importing cars, self importing doesn't exempt your car from testing. With that said it is pretty easy to pass.

I'd have thought it was pretty easy to prove it was an import. Ask the authorities to find a TVR factory in Canada!

From memory, the Mica Blue 'S' I saw at Watkins Glen in 1998, had Ontario license plates.

The details are abit fuzzy now due to jetlag etc but it wasn't blue. It was a sort of green/gun-metal type colour. The current owner only bought the car this year and was the third owner.

I doubt you will find any "S" that's 20 years old yet . However, the current owner seemed to believe there was a way they could get out of the emissions testing if they could prove it's import status in some way. Maybe there is a part of the import form that says what emissions the car was allowed into the country with? (just wildly guessing ).

Unfortunately I didn't get any further information as my time had run-out and I had to go and collect the other half before I got into trouble . I would have loved to have chatted or longer but...
