I like the cut of this man’s jib...

cool

Edit: I’m not sure what is the most inspired piece, picking up a supercharged Range Rover for £3630, bargain of the century surely, or converting it to a track car.

You may struggle with IATs, hence your limp mode problem. PD blowers, especially undersized ones make loads of heat when run flat out and a smaller pulley will make it worse as what you gain in boost, you’ll lose in timing due to heat. The problem is often the inefficiency of the valley heat exchanger.

An uprated water pump for the charge cooling might a worthy upgrade as well as losing the air con and under bonnet insulation. Lose all the weight, hammer it around the track, monitor iat, and if it's still not fast enough, then go for the upgraded pulley.smashdriving

That looks great. It would look ever better if the roof height was chopped a few inches.

It seems like I'm the only one thinking this is a bit of a waste of time? I'm sure this is an interesting experiment and not trying to offend, but if you actually want a track car to enjoy on the track I don't think this is it.
I've taken my comp safari racer drag racing and to a couple of sprints.

I enjoyed using something that at face value was unsuitable but in reality was competitive enough.

Go for it!

Awesome. Awesome.

20s are still a big wheel, is there a smaller lighter VW wheel that will go on.

I thought a lot of the body on these was Al, so weight savings likely to be from the chassis; towbar (though I like the idea of this being usable for some reason...), exhaust, bumpers, glass, A/C, steering wheel all as previously mentioned.

Half and hour underneath with a pressure washer will probably find 10kilos of crud too.

Is there an aluminium truck radiator to help with cooling?

Would a front splitter, rear strut brace and playing with tyre pressures help with understeer?

For their next trick, the team take a Citroen Saxo VTR and turn it into a Comp Safari racer!
Great thread and the stuff that mates are made for...

There is good info on the internet about how they took over a tonne from the Bentley GT to make the GT3 racer. Your approach of taking out everything not needed to make it go and stop has to be the right first phase. Then a focus on getting more air into and around the engine, radiators etc., perhaps relocation of ancillaries and modification of inner wings with some ducts would help. At least you have a lot of frontal area to locate radiators and, if al else fails, you could use some of the rear space you have now freed up. I suspect after this you will get to a decision point on going down the replacement panels route.

A brilliant excercise in doing something because you can. Thank you.

WOW, readers car of the week! we didn't see that coming. Thanks for the interest all.

A mini update, new stickers!

We have tracked down some bucket seat mounts for the range (thanks to pistonheads forums) so we should have them soon. Currently working hard on tracking down some seats so we can star stripping down the rest of the inside.

We have also had a little more luck this week, turns out the steering wheel spline is the same as an e46 BMW! WIN WIN, this should make it much easier to get something more track suited as there really is nothing for L322's.

Ryan is going to take a look at the charge cooler pump tomorrow to see if it is wired the wrong way round, this may be our first step towards more reliable power.

And here is a reminder of just how low this thing is now! + one of where we have got to with the inside. It’s just entertaining to look at!

If the noise of that compressor gets too much to bear then may I suggest some large bubble bubble wrap and gaffer tape

This should assist without adding any significant weight

Loving your work gentlemen

I have the same engine in my XKR - plenty of threads on XKEC about engine mods to squeeze out more power from that Jag lump. Alternatively swallows racing have lots of experience in converting XJRs to track cars so hit those guys up
