I have a friend who's recently done this after a 4 day stay. he didn't pay and just tailed someone out

I'm presuming that the airport carpark will have something in place to detect this but he's so insistent and confident they won't that he's betting me £100 that he won't receive a letter within 3 months

should I take the bet? (he's trustworthy to come good on it if he does get a letter and has paid out on other silly bets between us)

If i clocked someone doing that behind me out of an airport carpark I would shop them myself.

Hopefully he gets caught.

People trying to dick the system like that are part of the reason why prices go up for the rest of us...

But as far as your original question goes, I would be amazed if they don't employ some form of ANPR, I would imagine they are pretty wise to attempted scams... would be very easy to catch on to.

Which airport?

I'd be quite sure if you did that at Newcastle you'd get caught.

I wouldn't take the bet purely on the basis he holds all the cards, even if he did receive a letter, whats the guarantee he's going to tell you. Its not as if we men like phoning someone up, admitting we are wrong and handing them over £100. Even if "He's a mate" blah blah

Haha, is it rude to report a crime now? Perhaps WCZ and WJNB could share some guidance on what crimes it is and is not acceptable to ignore? Is shoplifting ok? What if I see someone getting mugged - is it rude to report that too?

OP, personally I think you should take the bet and if you lose, simply avoid paying what you owe just like your scummy mate did with his parking fee.

I had the opportunity to do this not long ago at Manchester Airport. They have recently introduced a drop off fee of £3 for 5minutes £4 for 10. Or park up for half an hour from £4 upwards.
I was going to pay at the barrier after droppinh my brother in law off and as the car infront paid and left, the barrier was up slightly longer than i thought it would be and in that moment i wondered if i should just tail them out for free, because fu man airport for your shtty drop off scam. But in the end i paid. Not sure why.

It's not a scam, it's to deter people who selfishly take far too long dropping people off so others can't use the (limited) drop off zone.

Surely the main point here is he is honest enough to pay the bet but not the parking?!!

There seems to be a growing acceptance amongst certain sectors of the population that stealing from “the corporate man” is acceptable.

Some will of course see nothing wrong with it.

Personally I see it as endemic of the sort of selfish small minded petty behaviour of simpletons who leach from this country whilst all the time bleating on about how hard done they are.

hmm, well we have been friends since we were kids and I feel like me not ringing up the airport and notifying them doesn't constitute ignoring this crime

if it was a life long friend that mentioned to you casually that he'd avoided parking fees would you notify ncp or whoever?

They will have ANPR; all the airports I visit clock your car reg on the way in and out and link it to your ticket.

Of course if you're staying for 4 days, you're foolish not to book in advance.

I suspect they will be on to him. How much effort they go to in chasing up for payment is another matter

No but I’d ask him how he would feel if his car got nicked from the NCP.

If he said anything other than I respect NCP for designing a system when cars can be driven out without a ticket I’d suggest he couldn’t have it both ways

So why not make it free of charge for the first 5 minutes? Dropped a colleague off a couple of weeks back and didn’t recall seeing signs for this. Also keeping to the limit is going to take you very close to 5 mins.

I used to be tempted at pretty much any car park in my old Caterham 7, there was rarely a barrier that would stop you if you so desired !

There is a free drop off zone.

"Certain sections of the population" will quite happily steal off anybody. But they'll only ADMIT to stealing from the "Corporate man" because, even with the anonymity of the Internet, it's not easy to admit how scummy they are in public.
