Now, my 350i has a twin tail pipe exiting through a slot under the bumper. The exhaust gasses are being sucked up by the low pressure effect of the flat back of the car, and giving the right hand side of the rear an attractive yellowey brown effect. Just what you need on a white car. I had the same effect some years ago on a white BMW.
Rather that having to polish it after every journey, I thought that a mod to the pipes may solve the problem. My thoughts are fitting pipes that point downwards, in the hope that the exhaust hits the fast moving air passing under the car, but it has been suggested that extending the existing horizontal pipes will take the exhaust beyond the effects of the low pressure area. Anyone else had this and what what your fix?

Best solution if you don't want to polish is to use some gaffa tape and then repalce it periodically.

The real problem is that the staining tends to occur more when the car is stationary than moving and this is not going to be helped much by the mods you've suggested. The pointing down trim is probably the best though.

How about a little stainless / alloy plate to cover the area .. as fitted to the new MG series .. and most Nova's too !

Hey guys:

Here's a solution I've used before. PAM cooking spray. Just spray a thin layer around the area before you drive, and it will wipe right off when finished. No fuss, no muss. I've even used it on long trips to car shows on the front-end of my car to keep bugs from hard splatting themselves on the spoiler etc. With a good coat of wax underneath, 30 seconds and it wipes clean.

Some gaffa tapes leave a bad/hard/bugger to remove residue if left too long.

No no no, you're all missing the point. Obviously you need a more powerful engine so the exhaust will come out faster and miss the bodywork completely.

Quite honestly Peter "YES" .... a very small Penis !!

If one is not well endowed in the trouser department no matter how big you engine is 4.6, 4.8, 5.0, 5.2, 5.4 etc it still wont make any difference.

Gaffer tape? That sounds a tad expensive. Can you get it in arctic white?

Oven spray? Hmmmm, not sure what an oven looks like let alone sprays for it...

Now the stainless plate idea has merit, but it would have to be about 3 foot diameter to cover the area of staining...

Well as I have an enormous penis already, I think the 3.5 will do for now. (Those e-mails about how to enlarge your member really work!)

Next suggestion please.

Elbow grease. Works a treat
Zymol shampoo I found shifts the muck easier than some others.

Lee, if I recall correctly an exhaust is not allowed to protrude further than the existing rear point of the car, usually the bumper.

Best idea so fare, especially if you can't afford the bigger engine,
Love the Gaffer tape idea, you could use it on the front to to avoid stone chips.

Not oven spray, the cooking spray you spray your frying pan before cooking. It's cheap, cleans off in a jiffy. Try it really! Much cheaper than the tape.

Oh it's to do with cooking! I will discuss your suggestion with the resident cook...

Take away curry containers? Ours our nice clear plastic. You can see what's in them when you want to reheat any remains... Can't really see the relevence to helping my problem though...

Exhaust sticking out too far! What a lot of twaddle. I had two drain pipes sticking out of the back of a Ford Falcon I had. As long as the ends are not sharp they seem to be allowed... Just have to make sure you don't trip over them, or reverse into a bank...

Next!

I have images if Tescoes around the country selling out of spray on oil for cooking, then 3 0'clock in the morning, several hundred TVR owners sneaking out to spray some on, not wanting to get cought out if its a wind up

Well, I went to John Wolfe Racing in Bedford to see what they had in turney down tail pipes. They had some excellent ones of just the diameter as the straight ones that are on it, but it will be such a b'stard to cut the old ones off in situ, that I'm going to buy a night new tin of original hard Simonize polish. That gets the staining off...
Well until the thing rots away under the car, then I will think again.
Thanks for your hints chaps!

JUst to add, does anyone have access to stainless sheet ? I think the wedge would look quite good with a piece to cover the exhaust exit hole in the rear valence. If anyone could manufacture some, with nice radiused corners, im sure there would be a market for them
