Suggest you give Dave Hemmings an e-mail on
928@porscheclubgb.com I'm sure he can point you in the right direction as he knows virtually all the cars on the club register and has details on every uk 928 as far as I am aware. Might be an idea to join PCGB too not forgetting TIPEC worth the subs for the advice alone.

Well answer is "I don't know" if you do not know the brand as such it is hard to comment.
I am looking for real world (human) experence not data.
All I remember is the 911 carrera is hard as iron!

Have fun in the non-member bits of PCGB. I think there are a couple of bits you could read....

For the definitive answers around the 928, try www.928.org.uk or for a good chat, www.porsche-1.net

Excellent sites, the pair, and Angus at 928.org also maintains a for sale section.

I bought a 944 after driving a few 928s as I am a great big girly wuss, and didnt have enough cash to fix the 32V V8 if it all went pop. S4, or GTS for my money. Usual things about paint bubbling along the windscreen, FSH a must over the last 5 years minimum, check the options stickers as a crash test, and if you want AC, buy one with working AC.

I ran a 928 S4 auto for 7 years and loved it. I had to spend a bit at first to get rid of some electrical problems, but after that the only thing that cost me serious money was a bent steering rack, and that was my fault! It wasn't too heavy on fuel (about 21 mpg for a year's worth of driving), used no oil, cost about £1,250 pa on average for servicing and oddments and only once let me down. That was also really my fault for not spotting that the hydraulics filler hose was rotting, letting the header tank empty rather quickly - the power steering on these things is essential!
On the road it was a delight to drive - as tame as you could wish for in heavy traffic, but setting off with a bellow when the road cleared. My first experience of that was in seeing off a pestering Golf GTi - I put my foot down and watched him swiftly disappear from my rear view mirrors, then realised I was doing 140. My wife didn't even notice the event, which says a lot for the car's comfort.
Get a good one and you won't regret it.

Dude I bought my first 928S a couple of months ago and I just love it definetly one of the coolest cars on the road at any price. Liked it so much I have just bought another one (a timewarp condition 45k mile car)

I like the auto box especially being in London and totally down with the look of the car, I like the styling of early cars best with the inset rear lights.

Been lucky to pick up two very nice cars both with the cool retro checkboard interior. let me know if you have any questions and I'll try and help. cheers, James

it's not a car, it's a lifestyle, and I can't imagine not having a 928. Mine is a 5-speed, but I love the automatics too. Get an ANSA exhaust system, buy a long chisle, slit the internal tube and pull out all the stainless steel wool. Makes for good music too, to supplement that fantastic handling.

The 928 actually has one of the best handling suspensions ever put onto a GT automobile. The Weissach rear axle provides the equivalent of "rear wheel steering" and it's uncanny how well the car actually holds the road under any condition. Good rubber for wet conditions, and you're in something that would cost megabucks to replicate new these days.

My 1983 928S was the fastest car sold in North America that year, and it cost about $50,000 new in US dollars. Now even 22 years later, the Corvette is priced near this limit, and has adopted many of the 928 features (but not all) that Porsche initiated in 1977.

I've found it is VERY reliable too, as I drive it every day to and from work, and what a joy it is to be able to do that, especially when I see all those other working stiffs out there driving pure pieces of crap. Me? Well I smile when I drive to work, sometimes obviously, but most of the time I'm smiling on the inside.

On occsaion when I see another Shark on the road, or a 944, the result is always the same: respect, a slow drive by and long look....and the thumbs-up sign, followed by a display of measured acceleration power.

Go for the 928, it's one of the most sophisticated pieces of equipment out there for the money, and you'll get more engineering and fun for the dollar than in just about anything else. Many have been sold due to a faulty relay that affects the fuel injection, and fuel pump, system, so go ahead and replace those now, and drive with incredible reliability. Learn to smile on the way to work too!

Thanks for the posts everyone. (love the pictures). I just love the look of them, I think the back end is just Porsche - I prefer this shape to any of the others. To me it is 80's !! The 911 is just too red braces and wall street fot me but the 928 always looked the most styled also the running costs seem about the same as the TVR.

Many thanks and perhaps you may see me on here in the future.

I am mad enough to run two 928s in Central London!!! I have a 1984 928 S2 5-spd Manual and a 1990 928 GT. Love both of them.

If you buy an early car you get less troublesome electrics, a simpler engine with almost the same power, but less torque and a raw-er feel.

If you buy a late S4/GT/GTS you get stunning brakes and loadsa of toys to play with, like a electronic differential lifted straight out of the 959, memory seats, wider track, a torquey engine and more modern looks. But the complexity can be scary.

Drop me an email if you need more advise

Alex

P.S. 928 can be enjoyed on track too...

No prizes given for the name of the track
