Noticed something a bit worrying today, when parking in a tight space in a car park (low speed) the steering wheel seemed to make screeching noise.

Is this low PAS fluids or worse ?

This is fairly normal too. Of course it is worth checking if your reservoir is low, or if you have any fluid leaking, but a lot of 968's will do this. If you can get beneath your car safely, check the gaiters either side of the steering rack to see if they are full of fluid. The seals on the racks on these cars can fail.

Low fluid can cause the screeching noise, due to air bubbles getting into the system and running through the pump. Be sure to use ATF in a 928 and 944/968 and not power steering fluid.

You might also check the drive belts, as a loose belt can screech loud too.

this is normal, there are a few things you can do and should know

1> this only happens at low revs as there is more PSI applied to the power rack

2> completely drain the fluid and re-fill with the correct fluid (ATF) , chances are is that its never been changed, ATF is Hygroscopic and looses it properties

this should cure the problem

Now that is a useful piece of info - I had sorting the squealing steering as next on my list of things to do (after the head gasket :frown, will give a fluid change a shot, as I thought it was water leaking on the belt (had a leak from the blanking plug on the water pump (now fixed) and thought it was that, but it's still doing it, so good to know another fix to apply .

I was worried about it to,
in fact a 44 I was going to buy (back in the day) had it.

If your going to buy one you could use the "noise pump" to get the price knocked down.

Its interesting to note that the PO service reports all say "noisy power pump" but no work needed. I think he would have sprung for a new pump. And of course this would have fixed it. BECAUSE THE FLUID would have been changed !

Fixed the problem in mine !
