This is definitely the thread for me at the moment but I’m not sure on options!

Current status:
Virgin Media customer for years. Our bundle has a phoneline (which we haven’t used in years), broadband (which is supposed to be 100 but has never tested above 60) and a ‘medium’ TV package (with a lot of TV channels we don’t watch)
This cost us £64/month and I’ve just had the letter for an increase of £4.50 (which seems more than others here)

I’m done with this and am building up the energy to call their crappy customer service.

I don’t need to the phone, I want to retain the BB and I guess I don’t need the TV channel package and live with Freeview/NF/Prime options HOWEVER the one thing i do use a lot of the TiVo box, the ability to record everything and pause rewatch whatever I want is great.

If I go to BB only with them I’m going to lose this, why are the alternatives? I don’t have a smart TV (although it’ll need replacing soon as a lot of the pixels are going pink) and I’ll need an aerial upgrade as my signal is crap. What other options are there?

You could go the basic broadband route I highlighted a Talk Talk package that cost £26 or whatever it was.
You could buy a freeview recorder box and split your aerial so it connects both to the TV and the recorder box.
At one point there was a glut of cheap You View branded freeview recorder boxes that enabled recording features. The Talk Talk branding made no difference to the useability of the product

I think I just need to get rid of the TiVo altogether and go broadband only which should be at least half the price.

The question is do I get one of these https://www.argos.co.uk/product/7608625 for the existing telly

Or flex the credit card and get a whole new smart TV? Can you get smart TVs with a built in recorder?

Right, just phoned Virgin.

For anyone looking to cancel, their cancellation team direct number is 0800 9522277

I was told there was a twenty minute wait but they answered pretty much instantly. Be warned, they are quite Scottish.

My current package was 350mb bb only for £43/month. The main customer services I spoke to (even though it was supposed to be cancellations, it isn’t) offered me £43.50 for 6 months, or if I wanted to drop down to 100mb it would be £47.

Cancellations offered me £37 for 200mb with a £20 credit. I mentioned the £28 for 200mb and was told that must have been a new user deal.

They then did the cancellation, quick and painless. Will wait to see if I get a call back.

Best bet is to call the number above without even bothering with customer services, there’s no record you’ve already spoken to anyone.

This will be interesting! Keep us updated. £37 for 200mb though, that's terrible! Good job on calling their bluff and cancelling.

I phoned VM last week, said I'd been offered £42 from Sky and wanted to leave as loads better than what I was paying for similar service from VM (£53 for Basic TV, 100Mb internet and phone anytime). Customer service agent gave me a load of spiel about how their service is so superior to fibre through phone line blah blah blah and was given a not very good offer. I explained I'm one of the top networking Engineers in the country (I'm not, I lied) and that the sky service is not that bad and more than good enough for what I need as well as their TV box being a lot faster and better. Told them to match the price and send me the latest box or lose me as a customer, fortunately I mentioned the existing box has crashed a few times (I may have exaggerated how many times) and she advised me to speak to their technical department very strongly and would send me the offer to consider. I didn't realise at the time but now reading between the lines she was getting me a new box as 2 mins on the phone to technical and a V6 box was on its way to me. Phoned back yesterday to moan about pathetic offer I'd received and was offered the same services I was on for £42.95.

Worked out ok for me, I can't get these services cheaper elsewhere and I got the new V6 box which is a lot faster than the old box.

Will do. Admittedly it was better than their first offer of a 50p increase for only 6 months!

Was surprised they didn’t really try at all to try and keep me. I just said I wanted to pay less. They didn’t even ask me who or what I was going to move to.

Good luck. Have noted the number. Need to speak to Vodafone to clarify a few things before I go acting like I have an alternative. wink

Yes you can get TV's that record, my LG will do it but needs a HDD plugged in (i tried it with a caddy and it didn't recognise the drive)

I would buy a dedicated box to receive the freeview and record it, I believe Humax do a very good one. I haven't had Sky TV or Virgin for nearly 6 years and haven't missed it. I use Netflix and Prime, with freeview and I don't watch much live TV

It seems 50/50 if you get a call back these days, if you don't hear from them with a few days to go before your 30 day notice period is up give them a call back, ask if they have a better deal for you and if not tell them to go ahead with your cancellation and you will wait the 30 days to come back as a new customer to get a better deal.

Reading this thread it looks like their best in class broadband is the hook they use in the hope of selling TV and phone services. People who only want broadband seem to get nothing like the retention offers they offer for 3 or 4 in one packages.

My package is way cheaper than getting it separately but I am not so sure I need it all. .

I would be quite happy if they don't call me back. It would mean I don't have to be with Virgin any more which seems like a bonus. I've had it with a company that thinks it doesn't have to give a crap about it's customers. If I don't get a call back within 48 hours I will be signing up for Plusnet.

Yep. Once I'm gone, I'm gone. Vodafone are looking enticing. https://www.vodafone.co.uk/broadband/deals/superfa...

For people who haven’t had a call back

Log into your virgin media
Go to your profile
See if you have marketing consent as yes.

If you haven’t you won’t get a call as you would have turned the option off for them to call you

I change my ISP every year. Was Virgin, then BT, then NowBB. I'm currently back on Virgin, I'm paying £27/m for 100mb and I got £100 cash back via Quidco, so it works out at around £19/m.

Plenty of deals about if you hunt, it helps if you have a BT/Openreach line installed and ready, every switch I've done has been seamless, I've also kept my landline number, you need to sign up to a new service before you cancel.

Personally I'd wait it out the whole duration, but if you're really cautious about potentially going without services, 2-weeks. This means you could sign up with a brand new provider and have their new services up and running before you VM gets cut off (if no deal agreed).

You can call VM at the 2-week, tell them their time is up, and that you're about to sign up with someone else as you can't risk waiting the whole 30-days + the time it takes for a new supply to get up and running.
