I was getting bored of Facebook so joined some local Facebook groups. Anyone else done this?

Mine seem to be just full of people complaining about rival local Facebook groups, curtain twitching, seeing suspicious people and reporting damage to cars and loads of other minor criminality.

Sometimes it’s probably best not to know this kind of thing, it’s the sort of stuff that makes old people stay at home reading the daily mail.

There’s also a local sales section which seems to be full of tarts selling worn underwear and tight dresses. That’s not just from me clicking on them either.

I moderate our local village page.

I'm forever having to deal with people falling out with other people over the most inane things.

Not seen any used underwear ads yet

My wife refuses to let me on our local one because she knows what I'm like but she showed me a pearler the other day of a man wearing shorts looking suspicious. He wasn't doing anything overtly suspicious, just wearing shorts in the rain. She also got worried last weekend because our road was apparently flooded. Needless to say it wasn't.

our local one is people complaining about fireworks, dog poo, speeding and vans driving round looking to steal dogs or just generally looking shifty.

They allow people to advertise one day a week and yet everyday we get tonnes of spam adverts.

I joined mine, and for the last year, i both love and hate looking at it. It's like picking a scab. Such things like:

  • A retired lady complaining that nowhere in the town serves a hot cappuccino.
  • Constant missing cats / dogs - they all look the dam same.
  • Notifications that the mobile speed camera is about - always gets about 100 comment of people either saying thanks or "you shouldn't be speeding anyways"
  • General old vs young "what has happened to the town" type comments.
  • People CONSTANTLY asking what taxi service to use, and ALL the local cab companies replying and sometimes sqabbling.
  • "Is your <broadband_provider> working? And then complaints about said service that they get ste reception, probably because they have the router locked up under the stairs covered in tin foil.
  • People in a certain part of town complaining about no mobile reception, yet at the same time there is a massive thread where people are opposing the erection of a mobile tower in said part of town. Proper NIMBYism.
On the plus side, it can be useful to see some services being offered, and also I get to see who the local racists / extreme right wingers are. I've also specifically avoided some local businesses because the owners present themselves as a tt on the forums.

Social media is fking cancer!

Facebook is what you make of it. It's certainly worth joining groups that cater to your interests and hobbies. I've found a few car marque-specific groups quite useful for quickly obtaining advice, or for purchasing replacement parts.

I have joined a few town-specific groups, only to leave them a few months later. It appears that for the handful of useful posts (e.g. events, road closures etc.), you're inundated with absolute dross, including people who feel the need to post 'hilarious' jokes/memes that really should be kept to their own FB wall ...

The majority of people on my town's FB page rant about overweight vehicles (and Range Rovers) going over our bridge - to the point where photo evidence is also provided! Someone here might be able to guess where I live ... hehe

I follow our local Facebook group after my brother-in-law told me of the occasional nuggets of comedy gold contained therein.

I find it be primarily awful and, just once in a while, heart warming.

Generally the levels of inadequacy with the English language are horrifying, whilst the content posted is mainly complaints.
However, there will be the occasional post about people seeking to re-unite pets, keys, and other lost items with their owners, and there is the odd post about other "good stuff" so there are some decent people out there.

The "pain vs gain" ratio to trawl through find the good stuff is high.

Great for seeing what scum live amongst you. Topics will likely include:

Local Tips - times of opening
Local supermarkets - times of opening, particularly around bank holidays
Local takeaways - as above
Dog Fouling
Lost dogs
Little brats lost scooters
Requests for info after someones pride and joy has been scraped (usually in a disabled bay in Asda)
Name and shame dogs being left in hot cars
Local council will take a bashing over bins, potholes, etc
Local scrotes being released from prison
Wrong un's spotted in peoples gardens snooping
Requests for recommendations for CCTV installers etc
Local businesses berated and banned for exceeding their advertising limits on said pages
Occasional political rants based on the leaning of the area
Why is the police helicopter out again?
Shaming local housebuilders

RInse and repeat....

EDIT: Same as devnull's post basically!

Our local group wants to declare a climate emergency in our village. Makes a change from them moaning about dog poo I suppose.

Ours had this corker earlier today - 'My friend is looking at getting new windows replaced. Does anyone have any recommendations.'

Comedy responses include - Glass is good. Why would you want to replace new windows? & I'd recommend he keeps them, it'll be dark without windows...

& most of the nonsense posted seems to be people too lazy to google it for themselves.

Isn't it just. I've completely given up with Facebook and closed my account. It's clearly not for me, I lack the tolerance for image crafting, closest racist/homophobic posts, thinly veiled threats, etc.

And that's just my mum

As for this social media platform, so many angry people!

Only joking, my mum is none of those things

oh yeah, you definitely get some gold in them.

I scroll past the dross, but for the most part, it isn't too bad. There's now specific lost dog/cat pages separate from the main page, but the more amusing thing is there are actually two pages doing almost the same thing, I don't know if they get on or not but we have "Horsham" and "Spotted: Horsham"

I've been known to leave many sarcastic remarks on them.

Or, for greater comedy effect, tagging one of my mates when someone says "anyone recommend a good dog groomer/taxi service/tree surgeon/mechanic/eyebrow waxer" - just tag your mates and have fun with it.

My local one is made up of 50% (fairly interesting) photos from yesteryear followed loads of poorly spelled semi racist replies suggesting everything was better in the old days (1970s) and 50% conspiracy theories that the council is deliberately running down the town centre in favour of the other town in the same borough, and complaining our town centre is worse than in the more prosperous towns nearby (not for one moment thinking that the reason for this is that our town is in the 'sweet spot' where there is a high level of employment so everyone is out at work when the shops are open, but not affluent enough to have a critical mass of rich pensioners or stay at home wifes (or husbands!) to keep things afloat).

Just had a proper look, we have a PE4 chatter group, PE4 buy and sell, Werrington notice board, Werrington gossip, Werrington open group. All catering to about a 2 mile radius of where I live. Madness, imagine all the crap you'd get if you were in all of them!

Our local East London one is shockingly bad, full of right on provincial types who have moved here because Hackney is too expensive.

Political arguments, driver v cyclist confrontations, knife crime, fly-tipping and what's with the police helicoptor overhead posts.

Pretty depressing apart from the cat threads. smile

yes I'm on 2 groups for our area - 1 for the local estate and 1 for the whole town. Someone started posting crap like that on the local one for a few days until they got banned, then took to the town one to start slagging everyone off on the other group. I'm assuming she got banned from that as well as I haven't seen any of her ste for a while. Stupid thing is she's fair recognisable (not in a good way) and works in the local Tesco.

By and large ours is full up of lost cats, people complaining about dog poo, complaints about speeding or boy racers or recommendations/questions about stuff readily available far quicker on google. I bite my tongue and don't comment on anything as I don't want to incur the wrath of the mumsnet mafia. The worst thing is most of the speeding/poor driving I see around the area is done by women with children in the back of their chav chariot/school run tank rolleyes
