My E91 LCI 325d failed to proceed this week. The culprit is the high pressure fuel pump, and in it's final hurrah it deposited tiny bits of metal through out the fuel system. This on a car that I was selling and for which the ebay auction was to end this morning. redface

By my (not very knowledgeable estimation) I need the pump, a new fuel rail, new lines (6) from rail to injectors, new injectors (6), and a thorough decontamination of the tank lines etc. FML.

Has anyone any experience of this failure, and the repair of it?

Not personally, but I had to recover a friends car which did the same. It was second hand and fortunately under guarantee. They gave her a new (second hand) car. From what the garage told me when I dropped it off it's not just the fuel system, it also deposits swarf into the oil system as well.

I have a good used HPFP, 100 quid. That'll at least start you off. It's a very good idea on these and N47's to fit a fuel filter on the return line so it doesn't write off the entire fuel system.

Wash the tank out, blow the lines through, six injectors (ouch) and it should be OK. This is an increasingly common problem on N47/57 diesels - as if another problem was needed.

I had the same happen on my e87 120d at the start of the year. Sadly it was scraped at only 120k.

My Bmw 5 series 520d msport F10 2013 broke down. After Diagnosis mechanic reported that the high pressure pump failed and swarf as a result entered the fuel system. I advised we didn’t mis fuel with petrol so it’s either picked up debris from the tank or poor design of the pump itself. Either way repair approx is half the value of the vehicle - do I risk in repairing and pray nothing else is affected or scrap

Is this a problem on m57 325d and would it be good practise to fit a fuel filter to the return line on this car?

It's about £1000 to repair - used injectors, rail and pump plus fitting as well as blowing the fuel pipes through and emptying/cleaning out the tank.

It's not that big a deal. The car is worth too much fixed.

No it’s not a common M57 problem.

Problem is the mechanic cannot guarantee the parts and labour if it’s not fully replaced
