Hypothetically speaking of course, what sort of fuel consumption would one expect at a steady 90-95mph on the motorway from an F-Type V8.

I’m trying to convince myself with man-maths that at a high cruise, a supercharged V8 is a reasonable option for a long-ish commute.

Thank you.

If you’re going to question the fuel consumption of a V8, then don’t get one. You’ll always be looking at the gauge trying to improve mpg. I just fill the tank when it needs filling.

Thank you for that response.

I’m not a V8 virgin but remain curious what sort of high speed cruising economy an F-Type V8 is capable of given its gearing, aerodynamics and modern(ish) engine.

For the record my BMW 730D returns mid-thirties when driven in the above manner, with my wife’s Alfa Guiletta returning not that much better. What is striking is that the latter is much better at lower speed but the gap closes the faster one goes. My theory is an F-Type would be pretty reasonable at a high cruise.

An XKR doesn't have the F-Types gearbox, but the only way to get that into the mid-thirties would be to have someone else tow it.

It’s specifically the motorway cruising MPG I’m interested in.

Don’t do much urban driving.

Some posts a screen grab showing them getting 41MPG out of their F-Type.

The best I've ever seen on my XKR was low 30s and that was running through a restricted section on the M1 where I was forced to crawl along at 50MPH.

There is no way on this planet that I would believe that 41mpg claim for a V8 F-Type!

For a start off, based on the signal strength, data-type, and battery level symbols at the top of the picture, I'd say that's some sort of phone app, and not from the car directly - That straight away brings the accuracy into question.

And for another thing, there's just no way a V8 F-Type will return that sort of mpg on a run like the one shown, unless it did part of the trip on the back of a low-loader!

These figures are far more believable (From the same thread: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... ) :

I've filled up the tank in my R about 10 times since buying it.

28mpg is the best from a tank - from a long motorway drive.
18mpg was the worst.
21mpg average.
And I'd suggest that the 28mpg "from a long motorway drive", was cruising along at @ 70mph, rather than tanking it along at 95mph!

Who the hell buys a supercharged 5 litre V8 F-Type and worries about fuel economy? confused

It’s Jaguar’s app. All the current JLR cars have an app which connects to the car and downloads various stats from the car including journey info, as well as permitting things like remote start. It’s accurate.

I like to have a rough idea. My XK is currently achieving c.30mpg. I wouldn't be too bothered if it was 25mpg. But if it was 15mpg then I probably wouldn't have it. Not because I can't afford it, but because it's bad value.

I get between 8 and 30 depending how I drive it, and on what road. If you want to have fun then mpg shouldn’t be a worry. If it is, buy a smaller engine.

41 mpg. No way. Owned one XK 5lt. One XKR 5lt and two F types R's and the best I got was 34.

My best is 4mph (albeit over a short distance) in an XJ40 Sovereign 4.0. In second gear with the foot in the carpet there wasn't much that could keep up with it. One passenger described it as 'like taking off in an aeroplane'. And of course Jags were quiet and magic-carpet in those days cloud9

I don't have bottomless pockets but do like to have fun.

Owners experiences of mpg is useful information.

If the average real world mpg was 8 then I wouldn't have bought it. Not a worry, just fact.

At a steady 75mph you'll easily get 36mpg (according to the computer anyway) You'll hit 40 if you sit at 70mph. It's 8th gear at 1500rpm that does it.

This is based on owning a 2013 V8-s for the last couple of years

On a recent trip to south west France, I averaged 75mph and 36.5mpg, V8R RWD. I was quite amazed as I did not buy this car for economy reasons!

Hi
Sad to say in modern motorway conditions I routinely see mid 30s on my F type SVR.
Best has been very low 40s. Honestly

I had an XK RS prior to this, so very similar engine, 545 BHP to 567 BHP of the F type

But the XK on the same journeys, never got over 30

I’ve been astonished by the F Type.

Buying a V8 or other large engined car and worrying about fuel consumption is a bit like buying a boat and worrying about it getting wet. If you want one buy one, drive it and fill it up as required and enjoy it thumbup

Indeed.

Sir could always get the 2.0 version (what the fk is a 2.0 engine doing in a Jaguar? I thought it was a misprint) and enjoy saving fuel that way.
