SQ7 exhaust sounds brill
Discussion
Heard an SQ7 for the first time in a car park the other day. It sounded lovely, really burbly from the exhaust. Could’ve sworn it was petrol but was a diesel.
How do they get it to sound so good and why can’t all diesels sound like this?
Anyone got one? What’s it like? Tempted to swap my X5 diesel for one when they come down in price another £10k.

It’s because they have a speaker in the exhaust to mask the chugga chugga noises. It’s not the actual engine note
I realised the noise was coming from the exhaust and not the engine. I also know some modern cars have synthesised engine noise through INTERNAL speakers. Are you saying the speakers are on the outside of the car, and that’s what I heard from 20 foot away?Coin Slot. said:

Yes, the sq5/a6 bitdi has the same system. You could also spec the Golf GTD with something similar at launch called the sport and sound pack (except the speaker just processed the engine note rather than making it sound like a v8 etc), but hardly anyone selected it so was dropped later in the model run. I had no idea that they played sounds like that externally.... how naff.JapanRed said:
My wife actually has a GTD and we specced the sport and sound pack but I’m 99% sure when it’s selected the noise is internal only (synthesised through internal speakers).
I have a GTD estate (that definitely doesn’t have the pack as it wasn’t offered on the estate) and it has the soundaktor which pipes engine noise into the car which is perhaps what you are thinking of. The sport and sound pack definitely makes a noise externally there’s a few videos on YouTube.thebraketester said:

Audi have done it since 2012 with the A6 BiTdi, BMW seem to have done it for years with the internal speakers
TBH there's nothing wrong with it, its just a modern version of a cherry bomb or muff diver or a different way of fitting a sports back box on zero power gain just sounds better.
