Modifying your car and what did you buy the car for.

Im starting to get a bit depressed on how much ive spent and going to spend on my car modifying it, but at the same time i love it and the mods really do improve the car.

I bought my car for 12500 and i have:

Spent 2K on mods so far.

Plan on spending 5k over the next year or so to get it exactly how i want it.

Car parts are so expensive lol.

My car is only worth about 8k now so pointless trading it up for a better model when ill lose loads just trading it in as ill only want to modify my next car.

2016 Golf R £28000
Mods bill at Awesome gti when is finished modding just over ten grand just didn’t know when to stop but know of loads who spent more than that .... madness
Sold the car a year later for £24k got a bout £3k from parts .... yup lost a fking fortune

Then 2017 Audi TTS just under £40k

Remap and dsg remap £900

Current 2018 S3 bought last year £38k

Mod bill £2300 that was done at the start and haven’t been inclined to spend another penny and won’t this time or ever again having done it in every car in the last twenty years

Probaly lost around £40k on changing and modding cars in recent times

With the RX-7 it's hard to draw a clear distinction between 'mods' for performance and 'fixes' for stuff breaking. Mostly it's been more the latter, it's only mildly modified running maybe 320hp or a bit more, up from 265 stock. Overall total costs, I stopped counting at around the £10k mark(!) To me it's a special car and the chance to have enjoyed it at its best on good roads & tracks has been well worth the money. As the saying goes, you're a long time dead.

It is if they are for track as opposed to road use.

I think his point is that you dont need to spend lots on improving a car if you get the right car in the 1st place.

I think it is. I have replaced OE parts with better parts, albeit consumables. I am pretty sure my car is modified compared to stock as Renault don't use RBF600, PFC pads or AD08Rs.

Yes, correct, it is optimised for the track at the slight detriment of road use, which the car also does.

Clio 182 Cup - bought for £2000, spent just short of £10,000 over a short period of time building it into a race car (actual race car, not 'racecar'), it got damaged and I got divorced, paid just over £3000 for my 'half' of the car, with spares, bought another car for £1200 to reshell, a further £1000 on some of the bits I wanted to do before but weren't allowed in the regulations and £1500 in labour to strip the old car and transfer it to the new one... nearly £20k on a £2k car.

I am not a smart man.

I once did what I always said I wouldn’t, I added up all the receipts on changes for my Westfield... it came to something like £8k!

Not bad for a car I only paid £4.8k for.

I added up how much I'd spent on my Skyline and stopped at around £18k in 3 years as I was worried my wife would find the list

Started like this

Finished like this

Totally learned my lesson as I went on and spent £11k in three years on my Evo 6 which replaced it

None of my cars would have been better as pristine standard examples. What you’ve said is nonsensical.

That there is a Grant Motorsport Vr6 with MSD ignition system, a heavily ported polished head, custom cams and most likely well clear of 200 nearer 250hp. LOVELY bit of kit, I know because I have some scandoulsly expensive receipts from Grant my collection of VWs

I've always made it a rule that you never ever tally up what you spend on car mods the same way I don't know a golfer or fisherman who would dare tally up the value for their kit..
