Happy Christmas All!

After another engine failure in the last week that's happened to a member of another Jaguar forum, I've decided I should really do the tensioners....I think most people have now decided that they will go at some point and it's a bit of a lottery when!

I've got a 2012 XFR with 50k miles on it.
It had a full Jaguar main dealer service history up until I bought it in December 2018. I then serviced it myself in Spring 2019.

There is no longer a warranty on the car.......I looked into extending the Jaguar warranty when I bought it but decided to put the £1k a year aside instead, hoping all would be ok!

I'm based in North London/Hertfordshire and sadly the local Jag specialist said he's never done them on the 5.0 engine and didnt sound too keen.

Does anyone know someone who is experienced with these engines and that they would recommend? Happy to travel for the right person.....

Also tempted to do them myself but does seem at the limit of my abilities.

Any thoughts or advice more than welcome!

DH Auto services in Luton seem good. I’ve not had chain tensioners done with them as mine was under Jag warranty.

There’s three to do. Cam chain tensioners can be done engine in despite what the indys tell you, though the front of the car comes off. The aux chain tensioner is an engine out job.

Here’s mine having the cam chain tensioners done. It went back to have a new head due to a manufacturing defect on a tappet. One of the last 5.0 XFs built too, so all will be suspect.

If you don't mind travelling, have a chat with Ray at https://surreyjagcentre.co.uk/

It's a family run place and come highly recommend in the Jaguar world.
Used them all the time, whilst i had the XFR.

Bit behind the curve but had mine done by the jag specialist in Nottingham. A trek for you but they did a good job. £2k all in and replaced with proper Jag parts, plus plugs etc.

I have done 25k miles in it since they were done too.

Does that include a new chain too or is replacing that pointless?

Thanks for the recommendation.

Do you mind me asking why you did yours? Preventative?

Did they find any wear on the original tensioners?

Hi,

It was rattling like a you know what on tickover and start up. I don't think they just fail but wear out so you get some warning!

I did the super charger snout too as they can make a similar noise but it was the cam chain tensioners.

I had the lot done, chains, guides, tensioners etc. The major expense is in the labour dropping the engine so might as well do the lot iyswim.

This was mine, not sure if links work?

That's quite some slack! How many miles were on it at that point?

I've got two 5.0 S/C engines, one at just over 100k, the other at 120k miles.

Both fine.Only issue in 30K miles on each so far was a water pump on one, and a S/C snout coupler on the other.
