Woke up this morning to find my kitchen window smashed. Called 101 and gave up after 2 ours on hold. Reported the crime online.

I dont believe anyone came in but cant be certain. So above the kitchen sink I have a medium sized which opens and then a smaller pane above. They have smashed the smaller pane and reached down I assume to open the handle for the larger pane. It was not locked but it is now. I'll attach some pics.

Nothing gone. I dont believe anyone came in but they were not far off.

My first thought was some how an object or animal or house movement had smashed the window. Which obviously makes absolutely no sense. The glass is all outside and hardly any inside. It was only on further inspection outside that I saw marks around the frame.

Bizarre that most of the smashed glass is outside, though?

How bizarre, do you have a nice car or something on display that they would be interested in stealing? Did your house look occupied last night? Traditional burglars don't normally target properties will people inside them as far as I'm aware.

I'd say they tried to lever it with a screwdriver and it's pinged the glass outwards.

They do look like screwdriver marks in the plastic. Are you a Golf R owner living in the midlands by any chance?

Interesting - ours are externally beaded and I was concerned that someone could remove the beading and drop the sealed unit out, but was told the glass would break first. Seems that's true.

I've had to replace sealed units before and it's certainly possible to prise the beads out without breaking the glass.

But I think external beading could encourage people to try a break in - why isn't all beading internal?

No we took the FIL's window out to get his new settee in and his old one out as that was the easiest option we didn't damage the bead or the glass.
Depends how much care you take i guess.

On ours you have to remove the internal seal to allow the glass to move inwards, then you can release the beads..

They've been trying to remove the beading to allow themselves to pull the glazing unit out quietly , I had this problem 12 months ago , they came back numerous times trying time after time to get the glazing units out . Luckily, and unknown to me as I didn't install the windows there is security tape holding the units in so they didn't gain access . I also removed the beads myself and glued them back in .
If they're anything like the pricks that kept coming back for my car , BMW 340 touring , they'll be back .
I put security cameras all round and three times caught them on camera trying to pull the beads , it only stopped when I sneaked downstairs without putting any lights on and confronted the would be thief with a baseball bat , he ran then a car pulled away a minute or so later , I'm guessing they'd worked out I was trying to catch them instead of scaring them . This was extremely stupid on my behalf thinking back but fortunately it worked as they've not been back .
I hope yours don't come back but I'd remain vigilant from now , ours probably tried a dozen or so times to get in after I'd checked all round . Park your cars as awkward as possible.
Good luck

I have a little gate on the drive which I could close and chain and padlock. That would completely close off the drive. Its not a massive gate or very robust but it's something. Would that deter them?

Not bizarre at all, they've tried levering the beads out to get the glass out.
They are however quite stupid, what you do is flick the beads up by inserting something in the parting line between bead and frame. Crims - not bright.
You need to make sure your units are stuck to the frame with double sided tape (will become apparent when they come to replace) as that is what scuppers them.
Older style units had nothing but a rubber gasket on the inside, once you'd levered the beads out the glass fell towards you and you lifted it out!
The best by far are beaded on the inside.
You have been lucky and received a stark warning, now you'll upgrade your security i'm sure.
