I saw the news report of the British GP on Sunday night, I didn't watch the race coverage itself, but was pleased to hear that there was to be a minutes silence on the grid before the race started because of the happenings in London on Thursday.

What I wasn't happy to see, and I mean quite largely incensed, was that according to the news report (and from the pictures they showed) the F1 drivers on the grid were having a laugh and joke during the time when they were supposed to be keeping their extremelt well paid and corporate fucking faces shut.

If the wonderful and rigid organisations that are the FIA and FOM can't get 20 men to keep their egos in line for 60 seconds then someone, somewhere, needs a bullet.

Same night, same channel, I witnessed ALL of the MotoGP riders stand silent for one minute before the Laguna Seca GP.

The current state of F1 being up its own arsehole is seriously getting out of hand.

The fans weren't much better. A couple of long air horn bursts in what seemed to be with middle though they may've been signifying the end.

If you'd have watched it you'd understand - the drivers congregated ready to partake and then after a while the horn sounded. This in fact was the end of the minute, not the start and all the drivers looked very confused thinking it was just about to start when in fact it was finishing.

There was no horn to indicate the start, that was the problem.

Yes. The organisation of that was pathetic. It was certainly not the intent of anyone there to be disrespectful IMO.

watched the prog last night, i thought they were confused as to when it ended, i was in front of a loud speaker in woodcote and i heard the commentators voice say it was over and everyone sounded off their claxons, you could hear this on the tv coverage too.

however during the silence max mosley was having a good chat, and so were JV and Monteiro. i think DC turned round and asked moseley if it had finished but the old fool didnt have a clue.... good job he isnt in charge, DOH!

I agree with your view entirely Don. Having watched it on TV live I must admit it did seem to be an awfully long minute!

More like didn't give a shit. Participating in the minutes silence would mean having consideration for anyone but himself, which seems to be a concept entirely foreigh to him.

It was more like 3 minutes! We had the benefit of something the drivers didn't - Radio Silverstone to give us start and finish cues for the silence period

I was on the grid immediately before the start. There was little or no breifing, nor any reminder to me as an Official about the 1 minute silence. It was only after that I recalled something being said at one point and realised I had probably mananged to be wandering about without realising it was during the period. Certainly the teams appeared to do nothing like stand back from the cars or anything else. There was also constant noise with cars and other engines running on the grid.

Renny, you weren't that rotund chap in the burgundy T Shirt that I spotted ligging at the back of every single Burdle grid walkabout shot were you?

I must admit I smiled quietly to a little in the middle of the silence when some monkey fired up an F1 engine with about 20secs to go.

The ITV camera was on Bernie at the time and he looked over in the direction of the noise, scowled "who the f... is that" and almost instantaniously the noise stopped again.

Generally though very respectful and well done.

And that would be such a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives to terrorism....

Like what has been said above, it was a case of mistake, not rudeness. In all the noise & chaos nobody knew when the minute either started or finished. (I was in the stand directly opposite where the drivers were congregated)

To reiterate my point.

As I stated before, the MotoGP grid (and entire circuit) fell silent, in a well organised and fitting tribute.

F1, by its own admission the pinnacle of motorsport across the world, couldn't even get the grid to keep quiet.

Sorry, I may have over stepped the mark on the bullet reference, it was a figure of speech and not a literal meaning.

However, someone still needs their rear end kicking for not having it as organised as it quite clearly could have been. As I also stated, I didn't see what happened live, only the news report.

Still doesn't excuse the cock-up though, especially when they're trying to stop every PR own-goal in F1 right now...

No I was one of the Scrutineers wandering about in shirt and trousers with yellow and red markings on their tabards...

And I'm not as rotund as some of my colleagues!

FIA, p*ss up and brewery come to mind. It was so disrespectful and done in front of so many cameras. I saw the MotoGP respect and that was in another country!!!

With all the expensive watches on the grid and not one person could time the silence.
