Ok, just had the common-or-garden top wishbone bushes done and although that has improved the steering immeasurably, I still get a load of thumping and bumping from it's nether regions on uneven roads that other Tivs I've driven didn't seem to. The car has just had a full schedule service by an indie I trust who assure me there's nothing amiss, but why the noise then? Do they really "all do that sir..."?

I do drive the car hard and use some pretty rough lanes round here so it's not impossible there's wear and tear coming into play (sorry )...ideas for most likely candidates?

I get lot's of clonking and bonking on rough roads too. I've been told it's the shock absorbers, though one source says it's due to noisey valves (in the shocks), the other says they've had it, but we'll sell you some new ones... I've yet to get a third opinion but It's been there for six months without getting any worse... Also, it gets better as the shocks warm up...

Not sure if this helps...

I only wish that I could help.I have exactly the same problem.Sounds like the boot lid is jumping around at low speed on an uneven road.I have eliminated all the easy options to no avail. Its a shame because I love the car but this is driving me mad.I have an appointment at the TVR Centre tomorrow morning,I will let you know their comments.

I have some knocking (rather than bonking or clonking) under the back somewhere but it's only really noticeable before the car's warmed up. After that it's only on particularly rough surfaces that it reminds me it's there. Convinced myself, rightly or wrongly, that it's the exhaust rattling on something but as it gets hot it expands and distorts away from whatever it's bumping against.

I would look for loose bonnet/boot lid or doors, waggle the exhaust round and see if it can hit anything, check for loose stuff in the boot, then move on to check for worn bushes, top balljoint, anti-roll bar mounts and so on. If it isn't any of those things, it must be a figment of your imagination!

I get the same noises (less so when the roof is off). Joospeed will be looking at this on Monday and, hopefully, will shed some light on it - I'll let you know the outcome.

if you think its the boot rattling, ask a friend to get in it while you drive about, their sure to locate the direction of said clonk/bonk.

check the exhaust rubbers aren't perished, especially the one to the rear which hangs on a rubber bush which are prone to clonk when old and haggard.

look to see that the petrol cap is clear of the boot when closed as these can touch causing a bonk. The filler neck may need re-positioning lower if its too high.
Also make sure the petrol tank is properly fixed,
early cars had the overflow bowl attatched in front of the tank(its hidden by the tank, left side)and this can come loose. Underneath the body the fuel filter can vibrate against the chassis.

other mystery rear end noises include the rear light unit squeek and i'd like to finish off with the rear hood section loose nut shudder.

or for noises from the boot forward check
the diff,diff bushes,bolts and locations.
then the driveshaft and uj's,driveshaft to diff bolts, rubber boots, driveshaft to hub bolts, hub bearings and calipers, prop bolts to diff and gearbox, while your there check the gearbox mounts and make sure that the gearbox is clear of the chassis under throttle and look to see if the clutch cylinder piping is secure and all fuel lines are attatched properly to the chassis with tyewraps...

if its driving you up the wall to the point of selling the car, then do yourself a favour and let someone else have a look at it,it helps honest.

and what a bummer if you did sell and it turned out to be a £5 bush that was the cause!! probably £100 fitted but that's not the point.

And i thought i was the only one to have these problems, normally when i start mine up from cold i get a knocking noise from under the drivers side this normally disappears when the car is warmed up.I put this down to the exhaust touching the chassis but ive had the car on a ramp and cant see any signs of it touching, any one had this?? another thing is the ride my brother calls the car an old knocker due the harsh ride over bumpy roads,i put it down to the suspension set up on the car,its had new shocks so i cant think of any thing else?

Took my Chimaera into the TVR Centre this morning and a pleasant, knowledgeable, techie took us for a drive. He diagnosed the knocking as the rear dampers. No guarantee of new dampers curing the knock. It seems the newer dampers have a larger top bush that may help - but not guaranteed.
Seems that I will have to put up with it.However it has put my mind at rest that its nothing more serious.

Heliox, thanks for your very comprehensive reply.I have checked most of them apart from the fuel tank bowl.I didnt know that it had one.Needless to say, despite the TVR Centre comments,I will have a look.

The verdict on mine is shocks. Replacing them may cure it but, I'm told, a new pair may suffer the same symptoms. I'll live with it for now, it's nothing to worry about.

That sounds interesting, can you elaborate a bit please. Do you mean the boot lid hinges?
