F1 qualifying proposals for 2006
Discussion
The F1 teams have come up with 2 ideas
Whats wrong with simply saying "just go out and do as many laps as you want in a single Saturday qualifying hour, you have limited tyres for the weekend and an engine that needs to last 2 races so you'll have to manage it properly" At least they can run on old tyres for the majority of the session and put some new ones on for some fast laps at the end. Just like the old day. And forget about qualifying with race fuel as well.
What so they have make things so bloody complicated

Proposal 1:
- 60-minute session, split into two 25-minute ‘halves’ with a 10-minute break.
- drivers may run as many laps as they wish, but must set a time in each half.
- each driver’s best times from the first half is added to his best time from the second half to produce a final time to determine the grid.
- no fuel restrictions - cars may refuel during and after the session.
Proposal 2:
- 60-minute session.
- after 15 minutes, the five slowest cars must retire from the session and will qualify 16th to 20th on the grid.
- after a further 15 minutes, the five cars slowest during that period (times cannot be carried over from the first 15 minutes) must also retire from the session. They will qualify 11th to 15th on the grid.
- for the final 30 minutes the remaining 10 cars will compete for first to tenth place on the grid, based on the best times set in that period (times cannot be carried over from the first 30 minutes).
- drivers may run as many laps as they wish in each period.
- no fuel restrictions - cars may refuel during and after the session.

FourWheelDrift said:Agreed. But I guess that'll never happen because it would require the FIA to admit they were wrong to change it in the first place.

I liked how today on the qualifying, there was a majority calling in in support of option 1 until James Allen said that was his choice, Brundle said he preferred option 2, James Allen then tried to say he actually meant option 2 and in the end 57% had voted Brundle's way.

Propsal 2 for me as well.
I'm surprised that Paul Stoddard thinks that as well!
Seems he understands what the sport really needs.
Good on him!
How about they add in another component - a human only one.
Each driver to undertake a a relay race around the track with 2 other members of the team - one a director/senior manager and the other, perhaps, a mechanic or maybe the driver's re-fuelling bloke.
Points awarded on the basis of position in the race (1 for the win, etc,) and the total of the positions for the the relay and grid position achieved in practice is used to determine the start grid for the race.
When people get bored with that the idea could be extended to include, say, a wet t-shirt competition involving a female member of staff from each team ...
Anything to keep the punters happy.
