Hi,

My mate keeps going on about his Maserati Ghibli Cup. Are they any good? He tells me that his 2 litre engine develops 330bhp, is this true?

yes it is true. The 2ltr engine 330 bhp was the most powerful 2 ltr in its time. Maserati were bench testing this engine to 550 bhp, but detuned it to give it more reliability. The 2 ltr 330 bhp engine was used in the maserati race series for couple of years. During this time not one engine failed in the entire life time of the series. This car is awesome.

Not only did "Cup" have the highest spcecific output of any production car in its day at 165bhp/litre but (and please correct me if I have overlooked the obvious) STILL does. To put things into true perspective Ferrari's F40 developed 478bhp from its 2,936cc giving it "just" 163bhp/litre.

To be fair, the cup does not have the low/mid range grunt of the larger but less powerful Ghibli 2.8, but once the larger turbos have spooled up, it flies. FWIW, I had a special build 2.8 cup spec (only 5 reputedly built) for 4 years that did not miss a single beat. That combined the flexibility of the larger 2.8 with everything else from the Cup. A different beast to my 3200 of course, but I still regret selling it.

If you are serious about buying a Cup, GET IT CHECKED OUT before committing the hard earned - Most have been well and truly thrashed. Use Bill McGrath's crew in Hertfordshire to do the check by the way.

Fugly cars don't count . . .

Wasn't the Masser designed by Gandini?

Well the Ghibli Cup is over 10 years old - the FQ400 (great car and yes i'd agree its fugly) only came out this year. What I'm saying is the MAserati is an impressive bit of engineering.

First Masser I ever drove, heart stoppingly quick, incredible punch from the twin turbos too Love em.

I owned a 430 Maserati and Ghibli. The 430 I had was tuned by me which developed 400 BHP at the wheels. Kept blowing up the Diff. Love the maseratis but sadly they cost more to look after then a Ferrari.

The car was a Q car. This is going back few years ago when cosworth were out their. My 430 left them all....

be careful - had one - loved it - bugatti blue and a superb looker but cost £15k in servicing (inc Tyres) one year - not great at getting the power down - wheel spin in 6th on the M1 - fun though
