15 years into my driving career it's time to introduce only my fourth different car

The previous three are all written up in this thread. My most recent car before this was a 2007 z4 coupé which I wasn't really planning on selling (I'd had it for 6 years) but finally decided I fancied something a little newer and a bit more reliable with a little more space for my bike

Another quick BMW was what I had in mind. I'd never owned a diesel before but had driven a couple of 640d's back in 2020 when I was considering buying one of those to replace the Z pre-covid. Unfortunately though those aren't particularly practical cars (despite the size) as they lack folding rear seats.

I decided to go for the next best thing, the same engine in a smaller and lighter car, with added four wheel drive, which ended up landing me in a 435d

The spec -

  • black sapphire metallic with black dakota leather
  • 19" style 704m wheels
  • m sport brakes with blue calipers
  • adaptive chassis
  • digital dash
  • reversing camera (can't believe this isn't standard)
  • folding mirrors (as above)
  • harmon kardon speaker and amp
  • sun protection glass
It also came with the usual standard bits - heated electrical sports seats, professional nav (8.8" screen), DAB, parking sensors at both ends, auto wipers and xenon lights, cruise control, high beam assistant, bluetooth phone and media etc.

The wheels, brakes and harmon kardon speakers come as part of the "M sport plus" package which I'd say is pretty much essential with these cars (any that don't have it sell for significantly less). The basic sound system has only 6 speakers and 100w of output, the harmon kardon system is 16 speakers and 600w of output. The wheels and brakes are a significant visual improvement on the standard items too

It's a bit of a lottery finding one of these with the perfect spec given so much of the spec is driven by the options selected by the first owner when new, my strategy was to pick a few bits that were essential to me and then anything else that the car came with was a bonus. It would have been nice to have got something with a more exciting interior colour and perhaps also the M Sport styling bits (splitter, skirts, diffuser) but other than that this one has basically everything that I wanted. I did drive one with the head up display, which I liked, but I think with a digital dash this isn't essential as you get the same information in a slightly different place

The car was sitting on just over 29k miles on collection. I'm looking forward to putting a few more on it over the next few months and years!

Nice car, ive a 430d that took me ages to find in the correct spec too. Most are standard with bigger wheels brakes and stereo. very few have big option list.

Absolutely loved mine. Pretty much same spec as yours (although EB) with a stage 1 map and some visual mods. I did about 60k over 3 years and it never put a foot out of line. I swapped for MPS4S tyres and it made a noticeable difference, however could still encourage a loss of traction if being a yoghurt around roundabouts. I only sold it as covid meant my mileage dropped to about 3k a year.

You'll hear criticism of the ride height and wallowing due to the xdrive, but personally I never found that an issue.

Ive had 4 cars since I sold mine, however last month got back in an EB 435i as I missed it so much. Enjoy it.

Very nice.

They're great cars - especially the LCI which ride so much better. However, you also have the adaptive suspension which is fairly rare.

I guess the good news is, for me at least, most of the stuff that I would want comes as standard with the M Sport Plus pack!

Coming from a lowered Z4 I'm loving the suspension at the moment! Adaptive does seem to make a difference too

Still required even with adaptive suspension?

I’ve got a 330d xdrive touring and they are a bit bouncy. Nice car by the way.

I'm doing 100 miles in it tomorrow and again the next day so I'll check back in after that!

Do you guys run yours in sport or comfort?

Comfort seems to be the best compromise

Quick update from me as I've had the car for a few weeks and covered around 800 miles

  • Very impressed with the fuel economy. Does 35mpg everywhere even in bad stop start traffic and 45mpg+ at decent motorway speeds
  • The acceleration is addictive! I rarely use it in sport mode. Grip is excellent even when pushing on in the wet around corners!
  • Really impressed with the ride on the 19" wheels. Much more comfortable than my old z4
Issues

  • Supplying dealer screwed the rear plate directly into the tailgate. Car went back yesterday to get that sorted out
  • Car would benefit from a good machine polish, will get a 2 stage detail booked in in early November
  • Only one USB port and the ambient lighting is very dim
Would be good to hear from other owners

Here is my F36 435d - Owned it now for around 14 months and its been faultless. *

Prior to the BMW, I must have had a mental break down, and brought a Jaguar XF 3.0 v6diesel Sport Portfolio. Full Jag service history 1 previous owner etc, mint car. Had it 6 months, in that time – 1 replacement engine as the crank snapped, then after that 1 of the inlet manifolds cracked, had 2 door speaks go pop, and 1 door lock fail.. Jag had to go, and so what to replace it with? I wanted something with some poke, diesel and reliable. So after watching one to many police interceptors, i thought the BMW 3 ltr diesel must be a strong engine to take the hammering they are getting, so the hunt was on.

  • Since owning the F36 I’ve had to change the disks and pads all round as it had a brake judder that annoyed me, M sport brakes are big.
Treated it to a celtic tune, helps it move along at a very brisk pace. Oil / filter is changed every 5000 miles.

Love the sound from the HK, the Jag had the 825W Meridian sound system in it, and both on par, but better bass from the HK.

20" wheels, and surprised how well it rides still, however potholes do cause moments of panic and swearing - Had to have one alloy repaired from getting a crack in it. I will be looking to move to 19” wheels soon.

Last 2 MOT's no advisories at all, in fact the 1st time i took it for an MOT i found out it had a factory fitted tow bar, open the boot, press a button and the tow bar appears from under the car. I have even now used the tow bar, cause I can..

So, to sum it up, great car, loads of room in the boot with the seats folded down to lug stuff about. Avg around 38mpg from something that has around 370bhp.

Have you notice a lot more soot on you exhaust pipes after the remap. Prior to my celtic map, the tail pipes had not a trace of soot, now they are very sooty after the map?

Your car appears to be LCI, so you should have a USB port on the dashboard and also under the armrest.

Your ambient lighting brightness should be adjustable either in iDrive or by using the dash brightness control next to the headlight switch.

Pretty much the perfect performance daily.

I went from a tuned 535d LCI which averaged 36 mpg caning it, to an E60 M5 which did 11 pootling around.

Other than the sound the diesel was just as impressive up to 120 leptons. Would defo like to get back into a 35d or a 30d and put a bigger turbo on it.

I had a mapped F30 330d for just under three years and it was an awesome daily. Plenty of power, averaged 44 mpg and never went wrong.

I always thought the six pot diesel was a better engine than four cylinder petrol engines too.

No second USB on mine, just the one in the armrest

Ambient lighting - I've found this within the menu but even the brightest setting is very dim. Perhaps this just shows the age of the car though as more modern stuff seems to have much brighter interior lighting
