Scoop - McLaren land £40m per annum Intel title sponsorship
Discussion
Whilst it was some time ago now, there was also a rumour linking Sony with McLaren. Nothing has come of it so far, so I assume that came to nothing. Interestingly, a quick Google reveals BAR also in the hunt for Intel cash, their big selling point being that the car will be a blank canvas, whereas McLaren have other sponsors like Mobil, marcedes and Johnnie Walker. I do like the current McLaren colour scheme, so I hope they don't change it too much to incorporate new sponsors, whomever they may be.
I will be in a dilemma if this deal does go through, though - I support McLaren, yet my PC has an AMD chip. D'oh!

edited to add - how would an intel deal affect Macca's other computer industry sponsors, like Sun and Computer Associates I wonder?

Ron Dennis is patently a superb salesman and dealmaker, so I suspect that it's less a question of whether McL will attract a big-league sponsor and more a question of the terms of the deal and the broader commercial affinities.
Ron also apears to adore shades of silver and grey (I believe that the registration or call letters of his plane are "GREYS" or somesuch), so it would probably take quite a lot to persuade him to change the basic McL colour scheme. Then again, if Vodafone were to offer McL the same chunk of annual funding that they hand to FIArrari...

Whilst Ron might draw the line at some colour schemes, I guess he'd pretty much paint the cars in any colour if the cheque were large enough. What astounded me was the lengths to which BMW.Williams would go to choose sponsors with the same broad colour scheme as them - Castrol were so keen to join them that they agreed to change their logo's colour from green to blue in order to have it on the car

Unless I'm Mistaken the McLaren's are in Mercedes Silver, hence no change with the change in minor Sponsor.
Even with Intel on board (or should that be inside?) they are unlikely to change their basic silver colour. Equally I'm not sure that West even influenced the choice of the cars' colours in the first place.
Remember the original test cars were orange! Until the whole 'Silver Arrows' nostalgia took off.
Even COMPAQ almost pulled out of Williams until they were allowed the red 'shadow' on their logos. Even this year HP were peeved that the RBS logo was more prominent . . hence change of 'HP invent' from slanted logo. (Think that $37 million versus less than half that for RBS per annum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Interestingly Samsung were strongly linked to F1, before they signed Chelsea! Also LG may go for more exposure rather than just sponsoring the annoying ad breaks when most viewers close their eyes with annoyance.
Now the fag sponsorship is gone (going) expect the likes of Macdonalds, Pepsi to sniff around . . . and give the holier-than-thou speech about not being associated with unhealthy products (sorry Burger King . . )

The only issue with brands such as McD and Pepsi is that they cannot advertise on F1 cars in their biggest single market - the US. I am absolutely sure that F1 has courted them, but the Indy fiasco will have damaged that.
It does seem that the Koreans are coming - Hyundai, LG and Samsung have long been tipped to up their involvement in F1.

Most team owners would paint their car in polka dots if they were getting sufficient dosh from their sponsors. As Mercedes are currently McLatren's biggest financial partners, then they get to call the shots on the current McLaren colours - hence the silver.
In the era before major spnsorship, McLaren were initially red. After a year or so, Bruce changed the colours to orange. They retained the orange colours until Yardley came on board as spnsors in 1971 after which they sported the white with two tone tan stripes. Those colours were carried into the 1974 season during which they also picked up a major spnsorship deal from Philip Morris / Marlboro. The classic Marlboro scheme became McLaren's "house" colours until the advent of the West/Mercedes era. The West logo is also red and white (as worn by RAM F1 cars in the mid 1980s) but Mercedes obviously insisted that their "Silver Arrow" colouyrs were to be the dominant image of McLaren. This is obviously set to continue no matter who else comes on board as sponsors of the team.
