I've noticed an increasing number of the 'nice' shaped (1988-1990, MkII I think?) GT4's for sale, and my wallet is twiching :(:D

What should I look out for? Where do they rust first, what should I avoid etc etc.

Any help appreciated!

Funny you should mention this ... I'm looking for the exact same thing. Seems like the perfect car for blatting along country lanes to me! Have a look over at www.gt4oc.net for plenty of info ... and plenty of cars for sale too. It's a ST185 you're looking for and it is indeed the second generation of GT4's (I think it's the 5th gen Celica, I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong!)

See you in one soon!

Hoontastic!

"Nice Shaped"?

Good cars. The CarlosSeinz/RC is significantly better, and priced accordingly. Bit on the porky side though, and not hugely fast running stock boost.

Good job turning it up isn't a problem...

Did someone say GT4 and Tastic in one thread??? This is the one for me!!!

The 1988-1990 GT4 is the ST165. The original GT4, and some say the best. Not me though . 165's range in price (condition dependant) from £350 - £1800, although if you find one good enough to warrant more than £1500, buy it. They suffer from rust & rot, all over. Engines are the bullet proof 3S-GTE, and drivetrain seem fairly solid too.

If you are looking to buy a 'four for up to £4k I would go for an ST185 CS or RC as these have the stronger gearboxes and chargecooler's as oppsed to air to air intercoolers. The non CS/RC 185's can go for as little as £1700 for one in fair nick, and up to about £2700 for a minter.

If you have more than £5k to spend, then go for the later model ST205 (see Mr E)

As mentioned, drop in over at www.gt4oc.net and have a look at the galleries, and for sale, and see what takes your fancy. But I will warn you, if you are thinking of getting a 165, they are quite rare, and good ones get sold very quickly.

He said it

I though "faff" originated from the owners "faffing"?? Or was that started by 185 owners??

Either way, everyone should buy a GT4, then the price's will start to reflect the quality. I have to say I am shocked at how cheap they are at the moment.

One day I'll own another one, but I dont think even a "One Account" could make that one day today. I'll get my coat

So what's the story with the jap import ones? Are they really going to cost me more on insurance and parts when they do go wrong? Or is that just a bit of urban bs?

Really fancy a CS or one of the other wide-bodied versions of the 185 (forever the 1great5 now ), but finding a good UK version that hasn't been overly played with seems tricky. I'm not keen on getting an overly played with one partly because I want to know what it was like originally and partly because if it's going to be messed with I'd like to do it my way.

Cheers for the help!

I believe that was an owner of a lesser model yes.
I think the line was "Oh stop faffing with it and drive the thing".

Regarding imports. Mines an import, and I've not had an issue at all with parts. Just the occasional pain of trying to insure something that's imported and modified.

GT4OC have a couple of deals with insurers that help a bit.

Basically, I'd buy the best car you can find, and not worry about where it's come from.

If you can't afford a good one, you can't afford to run a bad one.

Mine was a UK model, and it was just as expensive to run as an import

There are a quite a few wide body 185's about, just be patient and the right one will come along. If you want an original car, you are more likely to find it on a CS rather than a stock A2A. Well, thats what I found anyway.

This is what I was told when looking into buying mine (see here) but unfortunatley, I couldn't afford to run a good one

If I had'nt bought an FTO I would have gone for a ST185 wide body.
I still think thay are great looking cars and I believe they are very tuneable.

I've been thinking about one of these recently.

With the Tiv having to go up for sale, and my ST182 a bit broken these seem like a decent option. Cheap, fun and reliable!!

At least till I can afford a Skyline!!

Pretty bombproof, but you need to remember this is a 12-15 year old car pushing 10-12psi of boost. It might need a bit of love from time to time.

Stock, they're fairly reliable. Start turning the boost up (and you will want to) and you have have some fun.

Mine has been indestructable save for the few things that I knew would break.
