Any combination of digits. Just curious what these start at now either by auction or listing. I think I remember approx 10-12 yrs back (when I bought a 4-digit reg) you could pick one up for around 10k?

I think that probably sounds about right. The 4-digit plates start at approx 4 times what I paid back in 2013. It’s hard to know if we’re in a bubble or not with these as they’re not making any more.

Would the DVLA do better or worse, financially, if it liberalised its policy to allow punters to buy personalised number plates with up to seven characters / spaces in any configuration?

(barring of course configurations that are obviously rude or otherwise inappropriate)

Such personalised or vanity plates are not something I'm really interested in. But the question did come to mind.

They do seem to be a fairly decent investment - or have until the present time, at least. Suppose if car ownership dies out and we’re all driven around in driverless Ubers as and when we need them then that’s bad news, but otherwise I guess they’ll always be in demand.

I’m very fortunate to have the ‘perfect’ 2x2 of my birth year and initials and am confident that I could get back more than a paid for it a while ago (not that I’d ever sell it, mind!). I suppose numbers 1-31 will always command more than higher numbers, which I guess will vary in desirability as numbers of people born in those years get richer and then start to die out. biggrin Mine’s an 87 so at the moment probably has a bit more demand to go.

This is precisely why I won't spend a lot of money on plates,

If the government decides there is more cash in "you can have what you want, for a price, if it hasn't been issued" than the current system, they won't hesitate to stiff everyone with "valuable" plates.

My 5 digit plate was only £250 when I bought it 15ish years ago.

There’s a price difference between X1 XXX and 11 XXX or 111 XX though. If it’s the latter and dateless then would be worth a good bit more. That said, you’d do well to get anything that’s not absolutely terrible for £250 nowadays.

£30,000

There are only 9 left to auction off and after that they’re all in private hands

Ones like 4DU are around £33,000 and they increase to ones like JT 1 for six figure sums.

So you're saying that JT1 is worth less than 1JT?

Really?

Apologies, not sure why my brain didn't compute that. I wasn't even drunk.

So he is saying that JT1 is worth less than 11J.

Is that really the case? I always though that AB 1 format was the most valuable.
