Can anyone recommend some good current bars & restaurants in Chester? My other half has booked us a weekend there for my birthday and apart from a reservation at the Sticky Walnut on the Saturday night we don't really have any other plans other than a relaxing wander around (if the weather's kind!) with a bit of shopping.

It's been a few years since we've been, so any up to date suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The Chefs Table is decent food and bang central of Chester , there’s a bar called “ the undisguiser “ that used to be an old tailors shop that’s good , there’s a cocktail bar “ prohibition “ that you have to knock on the door and wait and takes a little finding , there’s a good 2 storey bar on the covered rows , the name escapes me , it’s wine downstairs and beer’s upstairs.
It’s a decent place for a wander around with plenty of drinking and eating places .
Opera is ok for a drink and a bite to eat , if you’re still there for Sunday lunch you could try their “ gospel Sunday lunch “ upstairs for something different .

I’m from Chester so can offer some advice on this.

For dining any option in the Grosvenor Hotel is superb and is very good value as the premium over other dining options is surprisingly little. I would also consider the Forge in the Hotel Indigo. I wouldn’t really consider anywhere else for your ‘Main’ weekend away meal.

The bar that a previous poster has recommended (beer upstairs, wine downstairs) is called Paysan that I could wholeheartedly recommend. For a more traditional pub experience try going further down Bridge Street where there are a few to choose from, my favourite being the Bear and Billet.

The first bar I mentioned is called the disguisery , we’re usually half canned after lunch and a visit to paysan by the time we get there !

Can echo the recommendation of the Chefs Table have had a great meal there (although not been myself since it moved - I have heard from a friend that it hasn't lost anything in the move). Also, Sticky Walnut shouldn't disappoint...lucky to have it only a 10 minute walk from me!

Depends on what your looking for obviously

- Hickorys is quite good for a casual American style smoke house - but is almost permanently busy as one of the go-to paces
- Upstairs at the Grill is a good steakhouse and usually comes up in peoples recommendations
- Couple of good Pizza places to look for "Stile Napoletano" and "Augusto Pizzeria"
- Death by Tacos is a great taco place if thats your thing
- Will not be some peoples cup of tea...however the New Chester Market has some great eateries in it, its essentially a food hall but can get very busy -but keep an eye out for tables turning - you don't usually need to wait long. Thai by Thai is my favourite in there, however there Seafood Shack/Guroma/Fresh Pasta Kitchen and the Pizza place in there are also excellent
- Other places of note, Chez Jules (French), Porta (Tapas), Ristorante Sergio (Italian)

Its difficult to list all the places I could recommend, we are fortunate in Chester that you have no shortage of great options - and can easily stay away from the chain restaurants. Even living here I suspect some of my information will be out of date as there are so many new openings!

Just thought I’d update this.

We had a great weekend in Chester and really liked the following:

Prohibition. We got a seat at the bar after a bit of a search finding the place initially. Fantastic cocktails.
The Disguisery. Another fab bar that was recommended.
Paysan. Loved it in there as it had a great buzz on both floors.
The Bear & Billet was a good place to watch a bit of the rugby.

We ate in the Grosvenor on the Friday night but we weren’t very impressed to be honest. The food was (just) ok but the place seems to be filled with chavs trying to show how much money they might have. It was also pretty disorganised and I can’t believe it’s actually a 5 star hotel as it’s pretty tired. A shame because I’ve always fancied going there but I’d never stay based on this experience unfortunately.

We did have great meals at both Artezzan and Porta.

The new Chester food market was also a really great place for a wander around and a nibble.

Thanks again for all of the recommendations.

It’s a shame you didn’t like the Grosvenor. Admittedly I haven’t eaten there for a year so things may of unfortunately changed.

Even though we live in Chester, we’ve also stayed there and really enjoyed it. The room we had was traditional decorated and most comfortable with a nice ambiance.
