New windows (UPVC sliding sash double glazed)
Discussion
Hi,
We are contemplating new windows, keen to know the "best" way to go about getting some quotes and best price.
So far;
1. Spoken to a biggish local company (Droylesden Glass). Found them incredibly salesy, and aligned with typical double glazing salesperson stereotype. I.e. my wife called and they were giving it all the "make sure your husband is at home when we come around to measure so you can make a decision straight away". Urgh.
2. Asked a small local guy to come have a look, he fitted our Rockdoor (approved fitter for them) but does windows too. Was by far the cheapest quote on the door, and did a great job
3. Stuck it on mybuilder and had a guy from there come and look, he is going to give a quote
Is there anything else I ought to be doing, or is this alone going to give me a good spread of options?
Would be delighted to learn from anyone else's experience - positive or negative!
Cheers

I got quotes from a couple of local window suppliers/fitters for 13 casement windows, price was just over £11k IIRC. I found a window supply only manufacturer who quoted £5.7k ish for windows only, they said a fitter would charge about £150-£200 per window to fit. I ended up doing it myself for £5.5k (I got £200 off as they provided the wrong obscured glazing pattern). They're esay to install if you're handy!
We've had a lot done over the last 2 years in one property.
Price wise, we used a local fitter - worked out to be about 1k per window on average. This included all costs, removal of old, wood to box in the sash reveal, refit and clear waste etc. The nationals wouldnt come down below 200% of that price so we think we're pretty lucky.
Make sure you pick the right profile and go ana have a look if you can. We used Rehau but there are others available.

I sold a lot of windows in the 90's - a 'one legger' (appointment where just one of the decision makers is present) is normally a waste of time, as all the detail gets condensed into about one minute and the bottom line price. We are contemplating new windows, keen to know the "best" way to go about getting some quotes and best price.

Even when they insist they are making the buying decision alone, they will 'always' want to speak to their partner, but 95% of the presentation and demo window gets missed out just for the number at the bottom.
These situations only really work when you are bottomed out and they are just looking for the cheapest quote.
I really doubt that you will get anywhere close to making a buying decision without having met the rep and looking at sample frame and glass options. At best it just means a second call back appointment to do it all again but with both partners. If you won't find the time - nor will we.
Make sure your window fitters are Fensa registered, or get buildings control in afterwards to sign off and certify - only really a problem when selling the house.
We had a big demand for sash windows but it wasn't what we did. Hardwood with double glazed might be another option over upvc.

Upvc sash windows are pretty cheap, how many are they quoting for?
I fitted these last year, they cost around £3k, they take a couple of hours to fit.
Victorian sliders? Since they changed the vents on them, you can’t get the heads behind the stone by much anymore. They probably changed the design since people kept on smashing the vents off when they were on the sashes.I fitted these last year, they cost around £3k, they take a couple of hours to fit.
They are not a bad window for the price, but quality control can sometimes be a bit off with them.

Yes, not a fan of the trickle vents either but can’t complain for the price of them, they were even better when they were £199+vat. I’m fitting some more this week.
Hi Lofty,Would you be kind enough to share your supplier? I am looking at replacing a whole house worth shortly & I am looking at UPVC sliders.
I have a joiner friend who is fitting but just exploring if I can find a better supplier then our local supplier.
Thanks!

Victorian Sliders, they are trade only but your Joiner should be able to order them.Would you be kind enough to share your supplier? I am looking at replacing a whole house worth shortly & I am looking at UPVC sliders.

A lot of the small suppliers buy from these and add a markup. Delivery is around 2/3 weeks.
