We moved last year from a flat to a house with a garden. I've never had to do gardening very much and the lawn was in a bit of a state.

There was a circular dead patch where a trampoline was and then a wood chipped area for a climbing frame. Both of these are now gone and I managed to get a light coverage towards the end of autumn as well as a scarify (manually) and re-seed.

The grass coverage is far better, but it's still not great overall. I suspect the playground area is compacted and there seem to be a lot of stones in it.

I can see weeds coming up across the main lawn.

So what is the best process?

I have a small electric scarifier.

Do I scarify, feed, weed killer, re-seed? I'm not really sure about the order.

Will the scarify be ok or do I need to hire / get a spiked areator?

It's all farily new to me, but I'd like to put some effort into at least repairing it so it has decent coverage.

It's a pain , but the best way of getting rid of weeds , is to remove them by hand, especially bigger ones like dandelion, plantain and buttercups etc. In a month, assume it keeps warm and the grass is growing, then moss killer weed and feed fertiliser . Give it a chance to recover and then assess what to do.

I just came here to say - Lawnsmith.

Sign up to their diary email.

First entry got sent out over the weekend.

Im not an expert. But basically by reading that site, roughly following their advice, I have by a county mile the best lawn on our estate. Whilst 'golf course amazing' might take a lot of work, getting from horrific mud patch to pretty decent lush green family garden is not that hard with a bit of knowledge.

what is everyone's grass seed of choice?
My research is leaning me to Masterline Pro50.

In my pursuit of the perfect Golf Course Putting Green lawn , I always use Boston Seeds Premier All Fescue (50% Chewings Bodega 50% Slender Archibal) in 20Kg bags ..... The birds seem to love it smile
