We have a Dyson Small Ball Animal bought in 2018 with a 5 year guarantee which ran out less than a year ago. A clip on the bin assembly, which holds the dust, has broken and while it can still be used it is something of a pin in the arse. We thought that we would but a new one but after calling Dyson we learn that it is discontinued. This is not an old machine and I am pretty appalled by this.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I have always rated Dyson as being effective and easy to repair and selling a good product. Not a mistake I will make again.

Have you tried Googling or looking on Amazon for the part? I did that to get a new body, after a clip on the base broke, and new battery for a 10 year old model.

Try thingyverse or printables, someone may have designed/modelled a replacement part.

Edit - this it?

I have now looked on ebay and found something that might be OK. It is about £20 so I thought that I would gamble as its difficult to be sure but it looks the same on the picture on ebay.

However, I think that Dyson discontinuing parts for equipment barely out of guarantee is very poor and I for one will be avoiding buying their products in the future.

I have a suspicion, based on nothing really, that there was a design fault that caused the clip to break prematurely and it may be that many vacuums failed from this cause and all the spares have been sold leaving other buyers high and dry. I could be wrong about that though.

How long should they keep producing spares for? I’m guessing as a business they know the market well enough to know when to stop producing spares. However as mentioned plenty of other places that might keep stock.

The right to repair act says an appliance should be repairable, and spare parts be made available for 10 years. Unfortunately vacuum cleaners are not within the scope of the legislation, yet.

It does however give a yardstick as to what you should expect.

That’s interesting, is there any rules on what is repairable? As in can zanussi offer a washer for 10 years and say that its offering spares for 10 years.

Also does this not create more waste if people don’t buy the spares?

I bought a new Motor, clutch, filter catch (e bay) filters and flexible hose for our DC 33 last year, there are plenty of spares out there for all models, e bay or Amazon.

Becko1987 is handy to look at for all things Dyson and other makes.

Right to repair act is EU... any appropriate legislation will be codified in the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

try www.espares.co.uk - have used them loads of times for Dyson parts over the years.

This thread feels a bit mumsnet with a lot of fury and talk of legal action because the original manufacturer doesn't supply spares. Theres loads of suppliers of original and pattern parts out there that are easy to find and fit and do the job, and it's not hard to find them! I've practically rebuilt old Dysons using parts from the above supplier - filters, dust bins, tools, motors, brush spindles etc etc.

In theory as it's less than 6yrs old the OP could take action against the original supplier if the appliance is end-of-life because it can't be repaired.

Recently had the same issue with a 5 year old Dyson hot/cold fan, sent it to them for repair only to be told they no longer make the part. That was £500 down the drain, especially as it only had minimal use. Won’t be buying Dyson again.

A photo of the broken clip would help. On my Dyson a clip broke which holds the main metal tube to the plastic handle (can't think of the right names for these). The design of the clip was such that I was able to repait the clip and it works fine today.

I received an old part yesterday from ebay's Dr Dyson. It was filthy and full of leaves so what it had been used for, who knows; gardening perhaps. Anyway it cleaned up easily enough and has now solved the problem although I would not be surprised if the same plastic clip goes the same way sometime soon. It looks a bit feeble and an accident waiting to happen.

I remain unhappy, as distinct from furious, about Dyson not being able to provide spare parts for a reasonable time, especially for very expendive items like Lagom's fan.

I am unfamiliar with what goes on Mumsnet and have no intention of any legal action. I also tried Espares whom I have used in the past with great succes keeping a DC01 going for about 20 years. Dyson's ease of repair was then, in my view, entirely praiseworthy. In this case the part was unavailable from them as it was from other spares suppliers that I tried.

The fact that Dyson appears now to provide poor support to customers does not sit well with their image and I thought that it might be useful to disseminate my experience. I am easy to ignore.

Back in the days of the DC01 we kept one going with parts from 'Qualtex' and I've still got some filters with that name on the bag.

Search for that name now brings up this:-

https://www.partscentre.co.uk/floorcare/vacuum-cle... which appears to have almost 2500 parts listed for vacs alone.
