Hi all, as I posted a month or so back, I have obtained a 200SX S13. This cost me £100. Therefore, I am looking for as many cheap (CHEAP!) mods as possible to make it go that bit better. (long post lots of questions)

I am pretty unfamiliar with japanese cars and turbo cars but not bad on tuning more traditional stuff.

I believe I need a boost controller and I believe a bleed off type is the cheapest. Can someone tell me some more about this device - how it works, how easy it is to fit/set up and what boost pressure would be safe with a standard turbo. The car already has a very noisy (and annoying) Bailey dump valve.
Bear in mind this will be my competition/drift car so will do very few miles.

If I up the boost, what else will I need to do to compensate/make the most of increased boost? Fuel pump? I intend to replace the exhaust for a freer flowing one.

When I took off the crankcase cover (the plastic thing with twin cam 16 valve written on it) I found plastic electronic box things above the plugs - coil packs?

The brakes (car has been static for over a year) are pretty knackered. I'll get new pipes, fluid and pads. Any recommendations for pads - I need something that heats up quickly. Would replacement standard pads be best or can anyone advise?

Any other suggestions for more speed are welcome.

Thanks in advance

Good purchase!

A friend of mine used to use a company called Silvia Engineering (for Nissan Silvias obviously). They did a cheap boost upgrade kit (bleed kit essentially) which was easy to fit and play with. I guess it would go on yours..

It was basically a T-piece with a vent to atmosphere and you could alter the amount of bleed by putting in different restrictors. Nice toy. Easy to make at home if you're so inclined.

Other than that, I'm afraid I don't know much about them. Try the owners clubs, they love their mods over there...

Have fun!

Go and take a look at www.sxoc.com - That's the UK owners club website, and there are quite a few knowledgeable folk there.

Damn good buy for a onner! Good car!
sxoc is deffo the place for good info.
My 2 cents:
Bleed valves, are cheapest way to increase boost.Downside is that they are not that controllable. Can lead to boost spikes & (in worst case) dead engine.
Under the crankcase cover?Yes they are coil packs,6 of 'em.Don't drop 'em,they are quite happy to 'go' quite often of their own accord & are expensive to replace.
Brakes: Aftermarket pads & discs will prob be similar or cheaper than OEM. Mintex,Pagid seem well liked.

bleed valve is likely to bugger the engine. get a dawes device (i understand this stops spikes)

you can pick up uprated fuel pumps for about £80.

brakes - if you have the s13, you can get s13a brakes as a direct replacement (iirc) which are better. you will also want a LSD off a crashed s13a too for about £150 if you wanna go drifting.

sxoc.com is your friend. Bren is also your friend

aarrghhh! SXOC is blocked on my work network!
galling!

does my car not have an LSD already? I meant to jack it up last night to check but I thought it did?
(it fairly spun round on me nicely when I gave it 4500rpm some lock and a dumped clutch on my tarred farm road!)

what's a Dawes device? how does it work? (and most important - how much does it cost??!!)

AFAIK a Dawes device is a bleed valve type controller. The difference being(a)build quality/tolerance & (b) it uses a ball bearing seal & seat for the open-close operation. The idea being that this gives a more accurate seal.
