Friend of mine told me about someone he knows who is paying what to my mind are impossibly large returns on investments, and I’m trying to figure out what the catch is.

I don’t have exact numbers, but we’re talking about giving the individual around £300, and within a month the investment being worth about £1200.

I know it’s not entirely impossible, but there seems to be an aire of easy money about it, and for me if it seems too good to be true it probably is.

First thought was Ponzi scheme, but are there other scams to be wary of, or maybe I’m being too suspicious and it’s simply effective investing. It’s certainly a lot more than I’ve ever seen on returns on any investments I’ve had, it just doesn’t seem right to me.

The person doing the investing is apparently only about 20 and living what looks like a very rich lifestyle out of this, if it’s legitimate then full respect to them, but something feels off and I’ve said to my friend to not get involved until they do more research on how legitimate this is, and to also confirm it’s above board legally and regulatory.

Of course it may all be stories, I haven’t seen any of the actual investments or returns, might be all pie in the sky stuff or pub stories.

If you can turn £300 into £1200 in a month and still make yourself, you don't need to take £300 from anyone

Agreed def a scam. If you can quadruple your money in a month, a year of that will increase the investment by 16,777,216 times. Your £300 would be worth £5billion in a year.

Even if true and you get 1200 squid back that would be part of the scam to get you to invest real monies.

Scam now or long game scam. In any event scam.

At that growth rate, after 1 year the £300 would have turned into £5bn. Totally believable hehe

A common scam. You give them a small amount of money and they quickly turn a healthy profit. You then give them a large amount of money and they disappear off the face of the earth.

An ex mate started scamming all his fb friends with some sort of Forex pyramid scheme scam.

He was a Regimental Sergeant Major at the time so I couldn't quite believe it. He was quoting stuff like 5-7% returns per week which sounds in the ballpark of what you're talking about.

He was adamant he'd already banked way more than he invested. Never found out what the end result was as he blocked me after I called out a couple of his posts.

That was someone who I respected and held down a job where integrity and morality are held in fairly high regard.

Instagram is full of all these. Some well known people like DMO are punting all of this and i wonder how they get away with it. Loads of comments on how they earn't x amount in a day or week etc.

You can see how people get drawn in because with someone like him (love him or hate him) and all the comments it sounds pretty legit.

RENT (Rent the runway) stock went up 162% in a single day yesterday.

So opportunities for big wins are around. I made 32% from it - only got in late, missed the start.

Sounds easy, so all I have to do is pick a stock that’s going to go up 162%?

I’m going to give that a go, there’s basically no downside I can think of.

I have a finance background & often get asked my opinions on things from friends etc, similar to OP’s Q.

It amazes me how some supposedly switched on folks get sucked in by greed.

Also amazes me that they think it wise to ask but then sometimes still part with cash “just in case their scheme is an exception…”

What the court service call “insider dealing” then.
