I want to respray my 2003 defender bonnet and i got a ridiculous quote of £1200!

Who knows of a sensible outfit in the Bath / Bristol area that I can get another quote from.

At this point, i can buy a new bonnet !

thanks
Joh

Try Woodland and Baylis in Yate. They did all of the panels on my Series 2 when I rebuilt it and have done several other vehicles for me. I am very fussy when it comes to paintwork.
They are the approved bodyshop for MAN Trucks on new and used.

That new bonnet will need painting too, so budget around £1200 for paint! laugh

More seriously, how much do you want to pay? Why is that price not ridiculous to have a good job done? Do people ever tell you, that you charge too much for your time and labour?

Cheap or good. Choose 1 that matters the most to you

Well you have a point , however lets assume the labour cost is not more than £70 per hour, paint £200 , does it really take 14 hrs to spray a bonnet ( thats off the car )

1200 for a defender bonnet! That is crazy - no need for the sarcastic remarks.

It's actually 'Quick, cheap, good, pick any two'.

FWIW last price I was given for a bonnet respray was several years ago - pre-pandemic - for a Peugeot 306 bonnet colour change from a local bodyshop whose work I know is fine & their prices cheap & that was a shade over £300.

My gut is that they quoted you a daft price as they aren't interested in the work.

Whether that's because they are far too busy, or they didn't like the condition of the bonnet itself. (and factored in a load of prep) or maybe just they took a dislike to you, we'll never know.

Was it from a bodyshop attached to a main dealer in some way?

That would be my take on it as well. Not unusual for busy companies to quote stupid prices when they don't really want the job, however if you're daft enough to pay it they'll squeeze you in.
