We are spending a week near Kitzbuhel in Septemeber and looking for any suggestions on
a) the drive down.
b) interesting roads in the local (or not so local) area.
c) the route back.

The crossing will be via the tunnel and I am planning on spending 2 days getting down there. Any suggestion for overnight stops would also be appreciated.

I want to experience an autobahn, which is probably the default route anyway. We are travelling in a VW Arteon with 2 dogs so just looking to tick it off the bucket list rather than setting a new land speed record.

I plan on returning via Liechtenstein (I had to google the spelling) and Switzerland, but I need to check on the rules for travelling into Switzerland with dogs. So any suggestion for interesting roads across the north of Switzerland would be appreciated.

Lovely part of the world.

Cross over into Germany at Karlsruhe.

Do the autobahn south as far as Freiburg and head into the Black Forrest (Can recommend hotels). Then take the country route in the direction of Lake Konstanz.

If you get lucky - you may see some Zeppelins test flying over Konstanz, as their factory is there

Check your car insurance if you’re going outside the EU. Post Brexit, many ins cos only seem to cover the EU, so not Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Andorra etc.

I renewed recently & had to dig around to find one which covered all of Western Europe as we too are going to Austria & Italy via Switzerland later this year.

Our overnight stops are Verdun, Memmingen (sp?) and Cortina, return via Munich & Le Mans.

Great point!

Car insurance says
"European Cover – cover extends to EU countries and those countries following EU directives"
which I assume covers my route. I will check with them to make 100% sure.

The AA specifically mention both countries in the policy document, so all good there.

I've never known a policy to exclude those countries, they are considered to be within the EU.

No problem with animal transit either, within the Schengen zone

I haven't done it yet, but there's a cracking route over the Vosges mountains down into Colmar, which looks a beautiful place to spend an overnight.

We did something similar last year.

Crossed the tunnel and spent the first night in Namur, old chateau on top of the old city, v nice.

Went to Baden Baden (2 nights including the Fabergee museum) the N500 road through the black Forest was great.

We also stayed near Lake Constance and went to the Zeppelin museum at Friedrichshafen.

Stayed for a week at Zell doing all sorts of good stuff including an early run up GrossGlockner (see below), Kitzbuhel and Salzburg.

Had a good time in Zell including paragliding, boat trip and a bit of walking.

Came back via Stuttgart Porsche and Merc museum.

When in Salzburg, Mrs L and I did a day trip that went to Hohenwerfen Castle (the Where Eagles Dare place), Zell am See then Kitzbuhel.

A very pleasant day, even in a Ford Ecosport hire car.

For Switzerland, if you’re planning on driving on the motorways, you should get a vignette (cost CHF 40). You can buy it at the border or an e-vignette online

I went down to Maranello from the UK via Belgium,Germany and Austria. It probably would of been quicker via France but couldn't think of a reason to go via France where as Germany I went to the Schumacher collection near Cologne, went to visit Concorde and Tupolev near Frankfurt and went to Porsche museum.

Came back via Switzerland and then into Germany again, as said above make sure you get your Vignette for Switzerland.

Yup, we drive to the wilder kaiser for a summer holiday, was stunning in summer. We did the Chunnel, northern France>belgium>karlsruhe>munich then down into Tirol. All easy enough but involved a few overnights and lots of full days of driving.

We drove to Mayrhofen a few years ago for Snowbombing, we made the mistake of trying to drive it in one go, it’s a big NO! Good to hear you’re breaking up the journey.

One memory was that we were cruising along the Autobahn just as it was getting light on a Sunday morning and we were passed by what I presume was the Munich branch of the Porsche owners club on a blast. Dozens of them bombing past us like we were standing still! hehe
