Looking for DIY barbecue ideas and build inspiration. I have an itch to scratch; wanna build my own. Other than the stainless grill on it, the stand-up one I bought from Homebase 20 years ago has given me my £80.00's worth and it's time to go new.

Has anyone built their own? Had one built to a plan? Ideas and pics please. The bigger the better!

you could think different and build an Italian style BBQ. Basically a solid slab with one of these on top

You then build a steel cage behind with an open bottom, rectangular and thin, runs the length of the grill.

You load the cage with wood / twigs etc, light it, and then as it burns you scoop the coals forward under the grill.

The grill is made of metal channels. The fat runs down them then along the bottom horizontal channel, into a small pot. This pretty much eliminates flare ups, which makes proper hot grilling over fire a doddle.

I built one in Italy with concrete, worked perfectly and was a joy to cook on.

I built a WFO with BBQ area and would really like to convert it to an argentinian Asado - a bit like the Italian Grill mention above but built with fire bricks so you can cook off retained heat for longer.

This sort of thing ?
Second hand bricks and some grill mesh off Amazon , or if your tight you could get a couple of old wire oven shelf’s from your local council re cycling- tip centre
That’s a home made exercise ball pizza oven beside it .

How much time/cost was this bad boy? Was the bricking an issue or did you get a bricky?

Must be nice to not have to worry about putting the poxy thing inside in winter.

Just in case anyone else wondered what an exercise ball pizza oven is: https://project.theownerbuildernetwork.co/2017/03/...

That’s it from the rear - side so you get a better idea of size and construction.

Having followed paulwirral's other thread, I would put money on it being self built (a lot of money too!)

I did indeed build it myself , but I’ve been in the building trade all my life and whilst not a brick layer by trade it’s not a problem to me .
No idea what it cost but it wasn’t a lot , second hand bricks , the tiles on the counter top I salvaged from my kitchen floor the other bits and pieces of tile detail I found at the house .
Time wise , if I was just building the bbq grill itself straight off the floor it would take a day on my own , and I made it up in my head as I built it , some would call it bodging , I prefer to call it ingenuity , I think used -salvaged products just suit the house better .

Something along the lines of a parrilla grill is vastly more practical and usable than most of the DIY efforts i've seen with poor airflow and temperature control. Not an issue if you are just burning sausages of a bank holiday weekend, but if you're looking for a viable method for cooking year round..

I built this a few years ago having never done any brick work before. I ordered the tray and grill off of Amazon for about £20 and used that as the template to build the rest. Bricks were swapped for a case of beer from the site manager on the new build estate so that they matched the house. I built it over a few days, taking it slow and only doing a few courses at a time to make sure that it was all square and level but someone who knows what they are doing could probably have it up in a morning.

The BBQ is gone now having been replaced by a Kamado type but I got a good few years of grilling out of it.

I did actually allow for air flow on the grill , its cooks everything really well . Note the adjustable fire bed , it’s really just a few fire bricks but I can move them if I only need a small charcoal fire .
I even put in removable ash pans , no idea where I found them but the cast iron charcoal grill is available on Amazon , I got mine from a mates skip to be honest

And for all year round grilling I built this under the canopy outside the garden room - bar - gym
It’s an old fire place gate that was in the house that I pulled out for the log burner .
It works surprisingly well no it’s easy to clean by removing the grates and pulling out the ash can , obviously I use the stainless grill shelf out of the other bbq for cooking on .

i didn't mean for that to come across as a criticism of yours! I meant it in far more general terms..

I know , but you did make me realise I’d posted a pic of an open sided brick box , and that it would be helpful to the op to realise what he may need to build to make it a little more successful for cooking on .
If anyone wants any more detailed pics of the air feed , ash box and charcoal cast grill I’ll gladly post them up .
