I'm thinking of releasing some cash to buy a house and want to sell my 650bhp GTR. As I don't wanna lose my NCB I was thinking of buying a cheaper car that is still entertaining to drive. I don't wanna spend more than £5k and so was thinking about an MR2 turbo (GTS?). Any comments?

Will I get a decent one for £5k? Or should I stick to a newer non-turbo for that sort of money?

I know the older ones are edgy on the limits - how do they compare to Chimaeras in terms of edginess?

Reckon I can find someone interested in doing a part-ex to buy my GTR (their car plus £10k?)?

Cheers.

Noooooo!!!! Selling the GTR! Are you sure????? Nothing is ever going to be entertaining like a 650bhp Skyline! Can I have a ride in it before you flog it?

yep, for sure. you'll have to come along to a skyline or sxoc meet in the south or something

Should get a good revision 3 (L-N reg) for the money, I'd buy off IMOC.

oo that's better than i thought then. i was expecting H reg or something.

Myth, they are only edgy if on a poor choice of tyre, choose good tyres, and have 4 wheel tracking done, and they truely are a revelation. I can only compare my modified (spec in profile) MRT to a fully loaded (air, pws, all cats n' baffles, multichanger) 1997 Chimaera 400. The Chim felt like a barge, a slow barge at that. Tbh it reminded me of an MX5. Seemed to take an age from turning the wheel to the front wheels actually doing something. Jumped back into the MR2 and did the same route- OH MY GOD!!! I almost hit the inside curb on the first lefty - the stearing was razor sharp in comparison. It felt like I'd just got into a Le-Mans prototype- and it sounded bloody loud. It felt significantly quicker, even on low boost, on higher boost, the Chim would have been toast.

oh right. the magazines lie then! i will have to try a couple.

still after one? i'm selling my mint Rev2 with only 66,500-ish miles on in the next couple of weeks, looking for £5k or nearest offer, pricey but it's a rare standard car, it's a black hard top GT-S with a few extras like steering fogs and climate control.

has 4 new-ish tyres put on not so long ago, Toyo T1 R's front and Yokohama's rear. will whack 6months tax and a fresh MOT before i sell, imported it last Oct but due to a lil speeding conviction plus needing a cheaper runaround i'm selling my pride and joy! e-mail me if interested!

i'm an imoc moderator btw

I wouldn't say lie, but the last test that I can recall of a (uk) MR2 was in 1990 when What Car pitched it up against the Lotus Elan. The early cars were more hairy, but there were 4 updates since then, but iirc, no-one tested them again.

I've read many an article blaming the 1990/1991 model year MR2s for their reputation.

I drove an H-plate Tubby before buying mine and they were like two different cars (mine is a rev2 1992 model).

Never been in a TVR so I can't offer a fair comparrisson, but I've been on track in a 2 litre caterham on slicks and the MR2 on road tryes still feels sharp after that!

The suspension geometry on the very first MKII MR2s tended to induce roll-oversteer followed by a vicious snapback in the other direction if too much opposite lock was applied. On the turbos this was rectified from Rev 2 onwards with geometry tweaks along with different wheels and tyres.

I have a Rev2 turbo and for performance and handling dynamics I'm not disappointed!

RWD, mid-engined. No traction control. No ESP. No airbags. No brake-assist. Screw-up and you die. Just as a proper car should be. Roof off above 1.0 leptons sounds like riding through the sound barrier on a chainsaw. Ideal for popping down to the shops.

Come MrE, what happened to our 2 year game of one-up-manship?

On second thoughts, please don't buy it, I can't afford a pair of HKS GT28/35's....

Really, really must resist.

Is Bayshore blue a unique spin on the traditional Bayside blue?

With regards to the MR2 handling stuff.

As Gaz said, it is a myth.

My MR2 was the first RWD car I ever drove, and whilst I had a few hairy moments in it, I was able to recover from them pretty easily TBH (all except one, which was completely my fault - I was flat-out in an attempt to induce power-oversteer on what turned out to be a very greasy roundabout, and I spun).

As Gaz said, the turn-in is razor sharp and grip is most impressive. And I really did drive mine hard (hell - I even blew it up*)!

*Actually, closer inspection has revealed that the cam belt snapped and pinged a valve or two off in the process).

Thanks, tuttle. It's based on a Nissan blue for another model range. I'm sure people read it and think "the numpty meant bayside blue" though.

ouch, danboy!
