I test drove a 996 Carrera 2 last friday and was very surprised by a few things with regard to the car...
I'm afraid I have a few "996 virgin" questions to ask....bear with me...
Are the brakes servo assisted?.....
Should they need much effort to slow you down?...
Is the throttle really stiff, normally?....
What are some of the more unusual things to look for...panel damage, leaks etc are the usual but are there any specific things....
I appreciate that these are things you might take for granted but I need to know what to expect when I finally get one!!...I'm used to an Audi..and no, not a TT!!!!....

Brakes are servo assisted, but they are not over assisted as you may have become accustomed to, if driving 'normal' cars these days. This allows better pedal modulation and facilitates heal and toe.
Throttle shouldn't be stiff though, although its not as lightweight as you'd find in a typical eurobox. Being floor hinged it has a different feel too.
Drive a few different ones if you are in the market just so you know the car you tried isn't a bad'un.
The real issue with 996s is to check for oil leaks or ideally get one with the OPC warranty still running. You don't want to be fixing an RMS problem at your own expense.

The comment on the brakes is a typical one. If you are used to an Audi, then that's as far polar opposite as you can get.
Porsche brakes are amazing, the ability for modulation is a very positive feature. The only problem is going from a 911 to a VAG as I did this evening..........my nose is still bleeding from being squished against the windscreen

The comments above are correct - it seems to be fashionable these days for most cars to have very heavily assisted brakes and porsche does not subscribe to this due to the racing heritage -it doesn't mean they will stop you any slower (actually just the opposite if you learn to brake correctly).
However if you feel that you are pushing very hard and the brakes are not locking (abs coming on) then the pads/discs may be worn or the brake fluid is poor or the brake hoses may be "bulging".
Throttle - depends on the year, but if it is a pre-2001 car it has a mechanical linkage which may need some attention - it certainly shouldn't feel heavy/stiff.

ooo im so glad you mentioned not being a TT driver.
not wishing to hijack the thread but 95% of all blokes i see driving TT's think they are ace, i suppose that might be seen a rich statement from a 911 owner but I do my best to let every other road user out if they need it and overly go out my way to make sure all other road users think us 911 owners are ok because of this un called for common misconception.
anyways, throttle, no way the pedal should be stiff, the brakes however, in my opinion are harder and have more travel in the pedal from light braking to hard braking than what I have driven regularly before.

Throttle, was it a Tip? I've noticed mine feels slightly creaky, as if the spindle needs greasing, but when I put it in D the other day I noticed the throttle pedal gains a "kickdown switch".
It's not like a normal automatic kickdown, but needs firm pressure to overcome and engage the kickdown. I put the slight resistance on the throttle pedal down to the additional gubbins.

My official posting, stated anyone that posted after the afformentioned "fat spaz" post is actually a, well, fat spaz, I would like to mention i dident say the now unpronouncable words so therfore, whereas I mabe slightly overweight, I am not guilty of the fat spaz title.
also, we need a mod to add the words "fat spaz" under the name of the next person to say those dreaded words... .. ..
