Ive been looking for a 996 for a while and today Ive found a nice one (spookily, today it was outside my office, i saw it somewhere else entirely yesterday and loved it, and it has a plate on it that is my initials (r**mjb), which I'm assuming is a sign from God to ignore my bank manager/ missus).
its a c4, in black, black interior, sunroof, sat nav and multi spoke wheels (sorry don't know what they're called, look a little like BBS ones on old golfs, maybe avs?) with full history, new clutch new service. its also done 80k. i don't know at this point whether its a 98 R or a 97 R.
Ive only had a chance to have a quick squizz, and haven't had time to pour over the history etc, but assuming the RMS has been done, is this a good price? given the choice its EXACTLY the spec Ive been looking for. and because its a 996 i can get in it comfortabley (old interior 993's are a little cramped for a man of my >ahem< build).
in short then, it looked lovely. haven't driven it yet (was on my way to an appointment in a school), but assuming theres nothing wrong with it, should i? its up for 27k, and i would hope to haggle down to high 25's. its not a Porsche main dealer, just a local concern. the chap seems right enough, at least in the short time we spoke. is this price reasonable?
id appreciate your thoughts gang. also, is there a significant difference between the 97 and the 98? id be using it as a daily driver if that sparks any thoughts.
id also appreciate any tranquilizers you may have kicking around the place, as the thought of working all day next to *my* porsche, which [i]literally[/i] has my name written all over it has me wired as can be. oh, crap.

I have never seen a C4 on an R plate....I recall a mate getting a very early one in late sept '98 on an S plate....Maybe it is an even earlier one you have found, it has to be a '98 car, something odd if it say's '97 on the log book....check the usual silver caliper colour and lack of front luggage space to make sure someone hasn't just stuck a 4 badge on the back of a 2.
i didnt look at the logbook yet, i only had time for a quick once over.
now that i think about it, it my well have been an S reg, i sort of... was.... well....smitten at the time and was busy picturing myself in it. with dannnnniiii minogue. you know how it goes....

Better to find a good S plate than a bad T reg model.
My remark with respect to the R reg was to set off an alarm for any monkey business.
I know the mantra of buying a car on condition and not mileage etc.... but to me I would want to buy an early 996 with 80k at a knock down price,,once they are above 100k miles they are really hard to sell.
Consider how long you expect to own it for and factor in the running costs and likely depreciation.
There are loads of 996 available,,,really looks like a buyers market to me.
When i go to buy a car, i go in with the attitude of finding the reason why I should not go ahead with the purchase.....if i can't find one I then own it.. Don't be afraid of rejecting a car, you are doing yourself a favour as when you find the right car you will enjoy owning it more and have no trouble in selling it.
If you are keen on this one, have it checked by a decent independent and try to get a decent warranty from the trader.

how much would you say is a knock down price enough for the car? have just done a search on autotrader and the c4s with sat nav, parking sensors, sunroof, nice wheels etc seem to be about this sort of price (theres a silver one with 79000 for the same money for example).

It really is hard to determine the price...reason being
say it's up for 27k....you get a porsche independent to check it and they say it is amazing,,,full main dealer history, never had a knock..all motorway miles, valeted every week etc...then you may get try for a few quid with the seller...or if a trader get a decent insurance warranty.
However if the inspection reveals...it has had a new rear wing or the gearbox whines, wheel bearing on the way out...odd tyres or any other ailments...that puts you in a position to either work out whether you want to walk away or negotiate to have the faults rectified or buy the car at a reduced price.
I would prefer to spend 27k on a good car,,,than 25k on a car that may need 5k+ spent on it over the next few months to get it up to an acceptable level. So it is not all about the price you may buy it for...hope that makes sense??

I agree with clubsport,its a lot of money for a car thats 8years old and the first 996s were'nt the best cars when new.I'd leave it.f I'd rather buy a nice late boxster S facelift model with a good speck and less than 20k on the clock for around that money,its a great car and in my opinion better value for money
does sound a little pricey. perhaps take to main dealer for their hundred and something point check - then you can get a porsche warranty and stop worrying about RMS etc. and you can use the info to knock down the price (since they are bound to pick it apart cos its not their sale).

no, clubsport and rob, youre right, the smart way to be go would be 'away'. but i think id like to dig a bit deeper, and see if i cant find a host of things to help hammer the price with. and im definitey going to keep all of that in mind when i go back tommorow and have a proper look and a poke around. i particulairtly like the idea of a porsche main dealer to find the faults.
but, i like the way softy's thinking....im a fan of anything golum based.
however, the nearest porsche dealer to me is colchester, and im doubtful the chap will be too keen on letting me take it all the way over there. so who should i get to do the inspection? will the AA do, or should i source an indy? that said, i know that the service and the clutch were just done at an indy in norwich, i wonder if he might be able to give me an idea of how well the car is? would this be enough to buy on? would this be enough to get a porsche warranty on?
