Hi guys...

Well it looks like my days of driving a manual car are coming to an end...and I am resigned to the fact that my silly turbo charged MX-5 is going to have to become part of my motoring history.

Thus I have been on a quest the past few days looking at Mitsu FTOs, I have always had a soft spot for them, and in a standard form one would be ideal for my daily commute.

Now driving a VERY (100% power increase) modified car I was thinking that I may cut a break on the insurance for one of these bad boys. My current policy is 1k a year with a 65% NCB, 3 points, good post code at an age of 29.

I was looking for quotes on a 2.0 GPX, no mods, value 5k...Aon said £1400....Flux £1000.....the best so far is £650 with Tesco, but I would need a tracker insatlled.

The question is.....Why? Really..why? Are they that high a risk motor car? I am going to continue to shop around, but £1400 for a 2l tin top?? Jesus!

I have a 2001 facelift tiptronic GPX 2 ltr MIVEC FTO with the type R bodykit factory fitted. Currently pay about £450 with Adrian Flux for fully comp, full NCD, non garaged (but on drive) and no Mods.

They are unfortunately group 20 insurance, mainly because they are an import and Mitsu parts are expensive. Good supplier of FTO parts is Camskill - sometimes better than the Mitsu ones and a lot less expensive.

It is worth looking at the FTO Owners' Club web site
www.ftooc.org
They have some excellent links for insurance and stuff.

Excellent choice IMHO.

Edited to add that I am over 45 - probably why the insurance is reasonable.

Why are you floging the MX5?

I have an injury to my left arm meaning I have less and less mobility as I get into my more advanced years....

Recently it has got quite bad, including a stint in hospital which was blamed on a bad days commuting to and from London.

So an automatic is way forward. Being a "jap-o-phile" I wanted to stay loyal.....that and I wouldn't mind a boot for a change.

6.5 isn't slow, imo,at all! (a standard GTST is only 6.4) Group 20 is well disporportunate (sp? )tho,am quite shocked.

Yeah Baby, Yeah

I seriously considered the 3ltr Supra instead of the FTO - just didn't really want anything that big.

But they are a damm sexy car - it would be on my list if I could afford a fleet of cars. And I would have loads of mods done ..... and resprayed purple.

Must admit that there is a real gap in the market for a decent sports auto. The SLK and Crossfire are more expensive options but IMHO they don't have the styling of the Jap stuff.
