My twit of a son who only passed his test 6 months ago was caught doing 102mph on th M1. Will he be given an automatic ban by the magistrates, and how long for? I also heard somewhere that if you are banned within twelve months of passing your test you have to re-sit it. I''m not even sure whether, in theory, a Citroen Saxo 1.1 should be able to reach 102mph!

I hope so. The combination of only 6 months driving, no doubt age, and being in possession of a Saxo 1.1 (with Fido Dido on rear screen) mean a ban might be an appropriate shock and kick in the right direction. Sorry Dad if its going to end up costing you !!!!!

My kid bro (22 with 2 years experience) got caught at 106mph on the M3. He got 6 points - IMO that's worse than a ban as he is now driving ultra carefully so as not to get another ticket. A ban gives you a clean license after 14/28/whatever days. Insurance probably load you either way. T/.

A mate of mine was done for 102.9mph on a dualcarriage way. He got 1 month ban and £180 fine. Expect your insurance to go up by at least 50% for a ban - much worse than points. HTH Rob

He obviously hasn't learnt the first rule of motoring - never speed on a dual carraigeway or motorway, they are big revenue earners for the Gov. and therefore are over policed and full of cameras. Jim

You are quite right - a Citroen Saxo's max speed is 97, according to road test gurus Autocar. Unless it was downhill, you could argue that the equipment was inaccurate/badly operated. Take some legal advice first, tho'. [Same thing happened to me: I got caught allegedly doing 87 in a 50mph limit,by a police Land Rover. 1. I wasn't doing even 80mph indicated (and almost all speedos underread at speed) 2. Land Rovers can't DO 87, so how did he follow me? 3. He was so far behind when he switched on his lights that I didn't even know it was a police car - looked like an ambulance to me, so I first slowed and pulled right over. I WISH I'D ARGUED]

with regards to Jats comments....seeing as it is "impossible" for the car to do that speed, assuming its unmodified, then I'd definitely argue the toss as well. The likelihood is that they will drop it to a below 100 offence...much better. I have little doubt that your son was trying to se how fast he could get it....point out to him as well that its your car and he will have just knocked everal years off its life expectancy....! N

i read a letter in EVO a couple of months ago regarding speeding and the guy asked to see the speed gun calibration certificate. Apparently they have to be recalibrated every day to prove that they are accurate and they police aren't just shafting us (more than they already do!). If they haven't got the certificate the guy who wrote to EVO said they would normally like to drop the case and you are free. I imagine that this is a lenghty process to get this far and would result in a fair few legal fees being paid. Further more I'm not even sure if it was true or a "enlargement" of the truth. Six points on your license within two years does mean doing your test again this I know for sure. As a final note, I am only 22 and have been driving for 10 months. Rather than drive quickly on the roads w I bought a cheap second hand 100cc two stroke kart for £400 and charge around kart tracks to my hearts content. Well worth the money and its teaching me good control of a car too. cheaper than losing your license/a driving ban etc! cheerio Pablo pablo

i think that everyone forgets that regardless of how fast the car was going, at anything of eighty there would be little left of the car or the driver if it was involved in a crash. it doesn't matter if it was 97 or 101 mph really, the charges for death caused by dangerous driving can be 10 years inside at HMP. rather than point out to the son that the cars life expectancy has decreased, point out that speeding can decrease the drivers life expectancy, the place for speeding is the racetrack not the road. I'm not trying to be smart but everyone who visits pistonheads.com seems like a nice guy/girl and should know the dangers of speeding. pablo

I would like to know what a lad of only 6 months driving under his belt, thinking of how fast he could get out a 1.1Saxo which im shower it will go over a ton on a flat road? dose he wear a bass ball cap????? what an idiot, (YEP its people like you that give people like me a bad name and high insurance for performance cars. If you lose your licence, when you get it back you might get insuard for a 50cc moped if your luck. i bet you were showing off to your bass ball cap wearing friends. I'm not one to comment on these issues generally, but here goes anyway. I'm absolutely certain that a number of the people who do contribute to this site on a regualr basis have speeded at some point, indeed when they were younger and less experienced. I know I did when I was younger and dumber. I have my moments now aswell. What you learn is that there are places that you just do not speed, not because you are going to get caught but because you are in an area with schools, or on the high street etc etc etc This lad has been stupid yes. Condemning him is easy when no-one can assess your own record of speeding or standard of driving. I speed on the roads and I believe that every single person I know does. It's to what degree and in what situations you speed that is the critical difference. Everyone's young once. PS - I have been known to wear the old baseball cap aswell, although never backwards.
