Has come on and voltage has dropped to 11 volts, I guess the diode pack on my alternator has gone tits up, question is, can I replace it or do I have to change the alternator?
TIA.....at least it wasn't in the middle of the Lord Mayors show

Had this one two months back. Required new (well, recon.) alternator unfortunately.

Before you do that check the Fuse Link.

I had my alternator stripped apart and was just going to order a new alternator, when Walldonway said check the fuse link.

It has got to be worth a try, the link only cost about £1.
It is under the car on the drivers side, near the starter motor.

Check that before anything else.

or even a slipping drive belt, they don't all make a racket when they do.

Nip the car to a decent Auto-electrician. They should be able to diagnose for you. If your lucky enough that it's a diode, then they should be able to fit a new one fairly cheaply. If not, then at least they'll give you a price for a recon unit (sit down for that one) or a new one (lie down for that one)!

When checking the fuse link, actually take it out, mine had a hair line crack that was missed on the first casual inspection, that is befor (oops) the alternator was replaced.

Cheers,

Simon.
