I went to look at a 3200 last week at an independent dealer (didn't buy it).

They had the red key but not the 3 card keys that would be at the front of the service manual. The service manual had three slots at the front for these "code keys" and it looked like they would be credit card shape and size. The manual said "don't leave these keys in the car".

Is it important to have these, what do they do, if I need them can I assume I can get them as long as I have the red key?

Hmmm, interesting. Thought Id check mine to see what they are!

I also didn't have any so phoned my dealer to find out what they are.
Apparently, although there are 3 spaces only two are used, both for radio code cards. My radio code card was in the Radio handbook so these 3 spaces have never been used.

So nothing to worry about as long as you have the radio code card elsewhere.

No, that's not correct I'm afraid. You should also have a red security card for emergency starting under certain conditions (code recognition problems). This will also provide the factory with what they need to supply a new key(s).

On rechecking, there are in fact 2 cards that you appear to be missing:

1) A red code card mentioned above for emergency starting, syncronising the codes of new keys etc
2) A code card for the ignition key with both mechanical and electronic code numbers for ordering key replacements.

Is it essential to have these two cards?

Should you walk away from a car that does not have them?

Can you guarantee you will not have code recognition problems or break / lose keys?

So no, I would not buy a car without them.

WHY are they missing??? Lazy Owner who can't be arsed to look for them or lazy Dealer who can't be bothered to chase? Neither would deserve my cash.
