I wonder what the order books are for the new car.!

When one looks back to the demand for the 996 GT3 Mk1, back in 1999/2000.. I seem to remember the car magazines in ecstacy over the new arrival of the MK1. Reason being that the previous incarnation of track biased 911 (993 RS/R), was built in so few numbers, and was mega bucks.!
Hence the Mk1 was built in low volume numbers and were sold out from day 1, and secondhand residuals were v.high.

The Mk2 arrival in 03, again was received with much hype, but now the marketing men at Porsche were ready to supply big time.. No question the Mk2 is the better car .. but huge demand was met with huge supply (relatively for a very focused car). This caused initial high residuals, but as we now can see.. residuals have plummeted.!!

RS arrives late 03.. again big hype, limited demand.. limited supply. This I am pleased about, currently owning one. Hard to guage RS residuals, until the 997 GT3 is priced and driven.

So we await the 997 GT3..
Now that people can read through the lines.. and know how the car will be marketed, RS to follow.. will the punters be gullible enough to snap it up, and encourage the Porker marketing boys to oversupply..!! ?

The UK GT3 market is currently so over-saturated, that are there enough people willing to pay £85k for a car that is going to be marginally quicker than a tweaked Mk2 or RS..??

Would you sell your tweaked Mk2 for £50k to pay another £35k for similar or slightly better performance..

Time will tell

IMO

The is a lot of development potential in the MK2 - especially the RS. I'd keep what you had..

Good question Rob

I've just bought a virginal 996 GT3 Mark II for this reason.

I'm sure the 997 GT3 will be improved over my car but no way enough to justify the extra cost.

Car fashion is an expensive game especially with the cost of Porsche options!!

I still can't see how the 997 GT3 will be faster, but await the new car with baited breath. I'm not swapping from my RS though. Rather spend the money using it...

Of course it will be faster, that is a given....The posted track times for the 997 S look impressive enough and are a step forward over the previous model. Porsches evolve, there will be buyers rolling forward for the 997GT3.
The market will decide the value of the previous model by the number of people who are prepared to spend that ammount of money on essentially a track car...
As good as they are there is still a wide premium to a 964RS for example which can offer as much excitement as you can handle on track for 30 grand.

Us GT3 owners think we are having it tough with depreciation, spare a thought for the poor Carrera GT owners only last week a brand new delivery mileage car was open to offers at very low 200K's, most paid £350K for them so what is a 2 year old one worth with 20K miles? Obviously Porsche don't give a monkey's about residual values on their flagship model I believe they are producing 1500 of them. Roll on the 997 GT3/RS it will be the same no limited production run with big depreciation again after the first 12-18 months exactly what we have experienced with our 996 GT3's....

I don't doubt that but if it really is the same 3.6 engine I'm curious where they will be finding the extra time. The cooking models added a load of power over the outgoing version so its no suprise the 997S is faster than a C2.

The cup cars are faster, but the reasons for that don't seem to obviously translate onto a road car. Also the 997 GT3 appears to be wide bodied so more drag + weight.

A little bird told me that the engine will be upped to exactly 3.8 litres with 102.7mm pistons to find the extra poke required by the Jones's.

I heard a similar rumour, and its the only way I can see the extra poke being found. Strange to have a different engine in the cup cars though. Maybe its also destined for the RSR?

In light of the current climate on GT3 prices surely this is a joke:

I believe it is,thats if you are ready to lock it away for ten years,by then all but a few of the GT3's will be tracked into oblivion and the rest will be well used.
Thats my opinion anyway.

Well maybe, but not before I have a taste of something different for a while. Just to make me realise what a great car the RS is and what a knob head I must have been to sell it.

You looking for your next car already Rob?

Still enjoying your old CSL - how are the RS and the Sag running?

Hi mate

Glad you're enjoying the CSL, car was setup quite nicely, when I sold it.
RS is running well, Sag is up for SOR, at Racing Green.
Both cars are too similar in attitude, but I prefer the 911.

Cheers
Rob

I've been on the list at my local OPC (Lancaster Cambridge) for the past 18 months but I'm unconvinced from what I've seen thus far. I think I'm first or second in the queue but I may ask to be moved backwards until I've had the opportunity to drive one. As many have already said the prospect of taking another financial toasting can become a little wearing, my CSL is still going well and I'd have to justify spending an extra (net) £50k or more. I'd also like to understand where Porsche are going with their product strategy, particularly how future Cayman variants and 911 Turbo/GT2 will relate to the GT3. Will the 997 GT3 still be clearly the best Porsche or will that be a little less distinct?
