OK so I havent used the Chimaera for two weeks and thought I'd take it for a spin to see Louise Macey's S Series on Sunday... cover off, key in, all lights on, pressuriesd fuel line..

WWWow... WWow... WW...

(flat battery so won't start)

WWEEEEEEOOOWWEEEEEEOOOWWWWEEEEEOOOWWWWEEEEOOOWWWWOOOOWW...

off goes the alarm system, it obviously doesn't like the sudden drop in voltage caused by me trying to turn the engine over.

Never Mind.. I use the Saxo instead, and dutifully cover the Chim back up making mental note to find my battery charger.

2.30am this morning:
WWEEEEEEOOOWWEEEEEEOOOWWWWEEEEEOOOWWWWEEEEOOOWWWWOOOOWW...
the alarm has now decided it doesn't like the overall state of the car and won't shut up.. it wont even switch off after the minute or so like its supposed to, so I have to unlock the car to switch it off and leave the car unlocked on the drive.

So, two things..

1, can I lock the car without setting the alarm ? (early chim, no key clickers) (and if not, wow what a stupid design)

2, if not, whats the best reccomendation for a battery cutoff switch and then can I lock the doors manually with the key??.

3, amusing anecdotes/other constructive comments appreciated

Cheers
Matt.

1. Get a conditioner on the battery.
2. Why are you not using it more often anyway!
3. Disconnecting the battery will reset the alarm and potentially screw it up big time.

Thanks steve ..

1. my charger is also a conditioner however trailing an extension lead to the drive from the kitchen constantly will not impress Mrs H.

2. Using it...!? I remember thanks for that, just been using the "daily hack" a bit in all the floods round here recently.

3. OK so I won't do that, but it seriously is a pain in the arse that you can't switch it off if you happen to be somewhere windy. I was in Whitby a couple of months ago and the gusts of wind perpetually set the alarm off, but I couldn't have the alarm off and the car locked

Matt.

You can lock it without setting the alarm by just turning the key through 90 degrees in the lock and not pushing down and doing the 270 degrees bit, but it doesn't activate the deadbolts or immobiliser..... cunning!

I have a 94 Chim and took the battery out to charge it and it didn't bugger the alarm.... this could have been luck I guess.

It's unlocked when horizontal, at least it is on mine. So put the key in with the lock horizontal and without pressing down turn the key anti-clockwise to the vertical and remove the key. This purely makes the lock inoperative so that when you press down the door doesn't open. It doesn't lock the opposite door or set the alram. Again I'm only talking about my car.... all this is shown in simple to follow pictures in my handbook that came with the car.

Hope this helps.

M@H, I've had the same issue's myself, so locked car as described above: just turn key 90 degree's anti clockwise without pushing down and remove key - et voila, door locked. Changing battery didn't screw the alarm either. Which was nice.

On this alarm theme, is it possible to lock the doors of a 97 model (button under wing mirror), without arming the alarm?

4.5 Chimaera with very sensitive alarm!

Remember - you can always unplug the siren and remove it and wrap it up in a towel and hide the bloddy thing until it calms down . .

How about adjusting the sensitivity? If it's like my '95 model the microwave doobry (technical term) has an adjuster on it - undo the rear screws on the centra console and lift it up like a bonnet ... should be there. (I'm not telling any would-be thieves anything here ... the main alarm unit is somewhere else, plus they should set the alarm off long before getting the screws undone if it's set correctly.

As long as the alarm is not switched on, the siren should not go off when unplugged.
