Why does the Cayman need to be "much better" than the Boxster? Do you want a coupe or a cab?
I'm quite surprised it's taken so long for this topic to pop up - most other Porsche forums have been engulfed in ridiculous rants about 911 coupe vs Cayman... Before anyone has even driven a Cayman!
Why not wait a week, go to your local OPC and compare them yourself?

I reckon so, but you'll (and all of us) will probably need to wait a week until its even in a dealer to see.
As regards a comparison though, its supposed to share 30% with Boxster, 50% 997 and 20% bespoke.... so it sounds like it should be a pretty good alternative.
997 is a better car, but much more cash.
If I was buying one, it would be the readies in my wallet that would make the decision.
Have a look at the options list and you'll see that the base price is a bit cheeky - you have to add so many pretty much essential items on which puts the price up considerably.

Well, the dealers have all got them out back now - ready for previews next week. First test drives next weekend.
Options cost is the same for any "low-end" Porsche - only the GT3 and Turbo come with everything you need as standard...
Better is a bit vague, better at what?
I'm sure the 911 will be faster in a straight line and have better traction exiting corners, but the Cayman will have faster corner entry speeds and braking won't trigger the ABS as easy with the lump being in the right place. You won't have to transfer the weight over the front wheels to get good turn-in either. The Cayman will mostly likely be quicker round the track than the 997, but I don't think track times carry much weight and relate to on road ability or fun.
I see the 350 BHP Cayman as the best option (if you need only 2 seats of course) for speed, handling and balance. It's a pity Porsche don't make one or are ever likely to

Only there aren't any in the UK yet....
Urr there are quite a few in the UK round the back of Porsche dealers. JCT 600 in Leeds have two and it is their official launch night this Wednesday evening.

I had a good look at several Caymans at Porsche Silverstone yesterday (in Silver and Metallic Blue).
I have to say that I still don't think it looks much better in the metal than in pictures. Comparing it side by side with the 997, the Cayman lacks that power bulge over the rear engine which on the 997 makes the flared rear arches seem more muscular. The Cayman by comparison looked much slimmer and with less presence from the rear. In fact somehow I thought that the Boxster looked more classy and expensive than the Cayman, but maybe I will change my view once I see them driven on the road.
I'm sure it will sell well, but my first impressions are that Porsche has been very careful to ensure that the 997 is the only Porsche that looks muscular and truly exotic.

They are awful those rear engine cars?...at least you have the Cayenne to keep you happy, they even put a VW engine in the basic one to make you guys feel at home

Since you have so much faith in Clarkson & Co, maybe you'd like to explain why the car with less power and an 'aweful[sic] rear engine concept' was significantly quicker than the BMW M6 and AMV8....

Simple - genuis engineers
Lets be fair - they've been trying to make that concept work for a long, long time. What is it now? 35 years? I've got a 1982 911 and I can tell you the engine is DEFINITELY in the wrong place! When I first had it I was worried about an 80 litre fuel tank and battery being the only things protecting me from a frontal impact... until I got to know the car and realised I was quite safe. Any impact would be from the rear!
As I once heard on a TV show, "if a woman had been in charge, they'd have put the engine in the right place straight away. However, a man has always been in charge, and as we know, they're stubborn, won't read instructions, maps or ask for directions. But finally, after 30 years, they've finally cracked it and worked out how to make it handle..." was referring to a 996 c2 Turbo
