Ever since the BBC lost F1 coverage they don't seem too interested in any Sports Personality of the Year candidates which might come from Motorsport but not F1

This year Dab Wheldon has become the first Brit since Graham Hill in 1966(!) to win the Indy 500, backed up by being teh firts Brit to win the IRL and ( I think I'm right in saying ) the first Brit since Nigel Mansell to win a major open wheel formula champioship in the USA

What about Gary Paffett? - Did he have to work hard to win the DTM or what? The first British Driver to win the most competitive road course saloon car championship in the world

Ask Joe Public who Dan Wheldon or Gary Paffett are and they probably won't know. There are good news stories here from Motorsport and we ought to shout about it to the wider world so they take some pride in our boys' achievements, switch on and watch or even come to the races.

You can make your nomination here

Expect it to be like this:

Winner: Andrew Flintoff.
Runner up: Michael Vaughan
Third: A footballer - probably Steven Gerrard.

Dan Wheldon, deserving as he is, will get a three minute section somewhere between the golf and equestrian slots !

I started this thread to encourage people to vote for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year - not to see it degenerate into a verbal version of the Battle of Flodden Field. Anyone who wants a detailed analysis of the reasons that the Scots may find the English a bit difficult to cope with can email me and I'll give them a tutorial on things like the Highland Clearances.

In the meantime can we please get back to getting a few votes into the BBC for our favourite drivers?!

My comment was aimed towards the fact that Andrew Flintoff is most likely to win it. I'd be delighted to see Wheldon/Paffett/someone who represents GB winning it, not a member of the English cricket team. Cricket is a minority sport in the UK anywhere outside of England, so I don't see a cricketer winning as being relevant to anyone other than an English cricket fan.

Anyway, Andy Murray would be a good bet

[EDIT]My vote would go to Andy Priaulx, European and World Champion in consecutive seasons [/EDIT]

How about golf?

European order of merit - Monty
Seniors tour - Sam Torrance
Challenge tour - Marc Warren
Brabazon trophy, Open Silver Medal - Lloyd Saltman

Clean sweep for the Scots there...

No need to drag the Welsh into this. The cricket would be relevant to them and anyway, they have the BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year.

Andrew Murray won the Young Personality of the Year last year.

It'll be just like the "Foggy" days.... Paffett, Priaulx and Wheldon might get an honourable mention if they are lucky, no more!

The fact is, Flintoff and the England cricket team did lift the spirit of the whole nation (England), and the best young sportsman in the country (UK) probably is Andrew Murray. The only awkward decision from my perspective is runner-up.

Like it or lump it, my prediction is as follows:
1. Andrew Flintoff
2. Frank Lampard
Young. Andrew Murray
Team. England Cricket... who else?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can't really argue about the Cricket team though. it was a hell of an achievement. Flintoff being the most 'media' able meant that he would take the limelight. I'm not really sure what Murray has achieved, although he did beat henman.

Seeing as how we now have a British World Champion in the form of Andy Priaulx, what are the odds he doesn't even get a mention???

Exactly how many of the British public will have heard of him though? Or dave Wilson. This is a vote, and as such the more well known, and media coered sports will get the 'prizes'.
