I have a Boxster 987S - great car. But, we are pregnant and due next May ! The Porsche is a 2nd car so it does not need to be totally practical as long as we can fit a babyseat in and a pushchair in front boot.

So I have been looking at trading in my 987S + some cash for a 2003/2004 996 Cab. Why is the C4S so much more expensive than a 996 C2 Cab ? I reckon around 10K more on average.

I know that its 4WD + wider body & better brakes but it is quite a bit heavier so the C2 has a better power to weight ratio.

Not sure about the rear reflector but overall I think I prefer the look of a C4S.

I did read somewhere that the chassis was stiffened for the C4S cab - is it a better drive - which one feels quicker ?

Any accepted reason that the C4S cab is so much more than the C2 Cab ?

Thanks

I think it would be better to compare a C4S Cab to a C4 cab TBH, due
to it's obvious 4wd benefits etc....

You have mentions all the extra bits on the S, and as you say, all these add more
weight, and thus lower P2W ratio.

The extra width of the S is meant to give a bit more stability, and i think it is 10mm lower
due to its sport suspension, which is not standard on a C4.

The S is stiffer than the narrow body car, which again, must add to its weight, also, you can
raise/lower roof on S while on the move, but not on C4

Boils down to looks, and i think, the S does look better proportioned, and think residuals may well
hold up better.

Glenn's answer reflects the technical differences between the cars. These differences are why, when new, the C4S cab list price was about £11k more than the C2 cab. This original price difference is 'why' they are £10k more now.

Okay so I can see some of the reasons for the price differential now - more desirable body shape !!! Plus better brakes & suspension.

What about driving sensation - Is the C4S the better experience or is the C2 the purer choice (lighter and RWD only) ?

Thanks

C4S is the better looking, without a doubt.
However, on a much more practical level, you will really struggle with any 911 with a new born. Especially any 996 4WD as the front boot is half the size owing to the 4WD gubbins.

Chucking my two pennies worth............
If you were looking for a tin top I would say C4S is a fantastic choice,it is worth the higher price for the looks, driving & extra's involved, plus re-sale ease! But not as a cab. It is simply one step too far being too heavy affecting agility & grunt, with 204bhp per tonne (1565kg), (a 987 Boxster S has 208) compared to 224 for facelift C2 cab (1425kg)and the wide body just doesn't look as good in cab.C4S form, subjective I know, but it's bum is too lardy!!!
I'd either go for the C2/or C4(only adds 60kg) cab or add some pennies & go Turbo Cab!

Looks like C2 Cab is the "sensible" choice then.

Better P2W ratio and more space in front boot.

But...I now prefer the look of the C4S - wider stance etc.

I like the side skirts. In fact seen a C2 with side skirts and they do make a difference.

So do I hold on to my 987S until spring or go for a C4S/C2 cab now - Is the 987S likely to depreciate more than the 911`s ?

What about a targa? Family member had one.....got to drive it quite a bit and loved it. Much more nimble/urgent than the C4S cab I had at the time. Don't get me wrong the C4S is a superb car, but the driving experience is blunted a little by all the additional weight etc. There is something about the way it looks though! Don't forget the C4S also has the hardtop included as std.

To further simplify your choice- Jade Goodey drives a C4S Cab (she paid for it by getting out her "kebab" apparantly)

Go for a Targa or better still a coupe...why bother with a cabriolet at all!

The Boxster is my first cab and I have to admit that the open top adds to the experience. The sound plus the wind in the hair just makes you feel more involved - you`re tricked into thinking that you`re going quicker than you actually are.

I think it will be hard to go back to a coupe now. Especially as the Porsche is not really used as a daily drive.

I`m not sold on the look of the Targa - I will try to get a better look at one. How much of thr handling ability do the C2 & C4S cabs lose out to the coupes ? Which is the Targa most like ?

Targa is still 70kg more than a standard c2 coupe and some might just say its a coupe with a big sunroof. Don't think handling wouldn't be that much different to the c2 coupe though and the rear glass screen does make loading easier too. Another advantage(or disadvantage depending on which way you look at it) is that it seems Targas are faily cheaper on the used market and didn't seem to hold their value as well as the C4S you mentioned. I drove a C4 cabriolet few months back, don't expect it to be a much better performer than your current Box',still had 911 characteristics though, which is good. Would be surprised if a c2 cabrio 'felt' faster than a c4 cab.

Because if you want a convertible and you need four seets (ie., a family) then what else do you propose?

Agreed they're ugly compared to the coupe and slower......

But, try one on a lovely autumn evening with a sports exhaust
