My 996 goes this week, and i really do fancy a change after 7 years of only porsche ownership.
Before everyone screams....... i will be back in a 997 before summer.
I want a car that is modern fast and fits four,a car that i can resell without taking a big hit on depreciation.
No more than 22k,so M3 or not?
Its been a while since i drove one but i remember the car being quick? My friends had plenty and says the engines/gearboxes go bang when pushed.
So guys anyone got one/had one....anygood?...warranty or not?

Had one for 30k miles and 2 years and loved it. Nothing went wrong with it but it was heavy on brakes and tyres.

m3 great car, dodgy in the wet and getting a bit long in the tooth design wise..new one comes out next year and will be quite modern styling..could knock the old ones quite hard price wise as they will look dated...big bm fan so no worries build wise or performance wise...m3 will stay with a c4s no problem...(ive owned both)thats why i had to buy a 996tt

Does anyone know when the new model comes out?
I dont wont to be loosing 6k in 6months,thats why i'm looking to buy at the lower end rather than cars at 28-30k.

Wonderful car I had two E46 M3s (manual & SMG) and definitely worth the change if only to experience BMW's finest car. Check out www.bm3w.co.uk for possibly everything you need to know before making the move.

Get an E39 M5, terrific cars. Will be great fun for a few months...

Haven't really enjoyed any M3s I've been in since the E30s.

The only M3 I would contemplate is the motorway to Southampton....

The latest model (not the wierd shaped 2005 one) has a lovely metallic sounding engine. No steering feel though and not the greatest gearchange in the world. If my friend's experience is anything to go by,they're not easy to sell.

had an M3 loaner - was very impressed by the finish (though this has been criticised by long term owners, mine was brand new), engine noise and performance, and std kit (makes Porsche look damn stingy)

negatives other than the 3 series feel:

a) found the nanny electronics far more intrusive than PSM
b) steering feel was awful, really over-servo'd

would still be my short list if I needed 4 seats

If you do get an M3 make sure it HAS the sat nav, those without are worth much less and difficult to move on.

Have just sold my 03 M3 cab to buy the 996TT, M3 was a great car and couldn't fault it, as said already new shape will make E46 look dated, they are getting harder to sell on and have been dropping in value alot recently. If you're gonna get one i'd get an older E46 which have already dipped below the £20k mark. The facelifted model came out round about July-Sept 03 which mainly consisted odf LED rear lights and different boot/hanlde thingy surround. The M3 is a fun car and is fairly pacey and sounds great. Seats 4 fairly comfortably but as said is really heavy on brakes and rear tyres, used to get about 5k miles from a set of rears.
