I think that from 993 series onwards the car's brain can be interrogated to give total engine running hours. Using this in conjunction with an average speed should allow a ball park mileage to be calculated, at least accurate enough to confirm or throw doubt on the mileage readout on the dash.

Presumably an OPC should be able to say how infallible or otherwise this method is as a way to verify mileage. By now I suppose there might some sod with a laptop who can go in via the diagnostics port and reset to whatever he is asked for, as they could with the early digital odometers on BMWs.

I tried to investigate this when I had a 993 and the answer I always got from various sources was no it isn't possible to get any data to verfiy mileage.

Ninemeister plugged his tester into the port on my 993TT and was able to give me total engine hours. If you say the average mile / hour is 44 which appears to be from my BMW trip computer then it gives a good idea, certainly it confirmed mine (we were looking for an airbag fault at the time.
