Would be interested in any expert opinions about this pad. Doesn't look very healthy to me...
Is the brown colour on the pad next to the disc a sign of overheating?

Is it "rust dust"?

Brake pads get hot and so the brown(sometimes white) colour is not unusual. There looks to be plenty of pad material left so I wouldn't be at all worried about it.

Reason i mentioned it is that the pad looks as if it has gone a bit flaky - not just on the interface with disc, but further back. Oh and it's only 3 weeks old...

It just looks like the paint has simply come off showing the side of the pad material. look very meaty. If you are worried, take them out and check they have not got any cracks across the face.

If the pedal is nice and hard, no squeeling and she pulls up in a straight line, would not worry.
