My brother has just had his car serviced by an independant and has been told that 3 wishbones need replacing, one urgently as it is unsafe to drive on. I know this is a known problem and I'm not questioning their judgement, but I was very surprised as the car is only a P-plate with 25k on it. Is this not that unusual and might it be worth fitting tubular ones which I believe Peninsula do, preventing the problem from reoccuring. Any info appreciated re. cost and your experiences.
Cheers Al.

The wishbones are an achilles heel - the subject's been extensively covered see www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=13709&f=8&h=0&hw=wishbone

I too had my Chimaera serviced recently with a recommendation that the NS and OS Top Wishbones are replaced....the cost of the parts including upper joints and bushes comes to £181, plus £100 for four wheel alignment, plus labour charge £161 and a payment to the VAT man of £77....comes to a total of £520.

yes I'm so

Going forward, ask whoever services your car to do as David Batty does and Waxoyl the wishbones every service. (Sensible to Waxoyl the whole chassis, anyway)

After I had my front wishbones replaced by a Bristol independant 'cos they were rusty and dangerous I asked whether I should apply some waxoil or underseal to them. He said that the new type don't need it as they are now coated with a better powder coating...but then he would say that wouldn't he.

Scraped all the rust off mine, painted them in Hammerite and put enough underseal on them to waterproof the ocean floor. I don't want to know what is happening under the underseal, but I hit them with a hammer from time to time and they seem to be holding out.

FWIW my 'new' white powder-coated wishies are certainly NOT much better than the old silvered ones - already flaking after two years in situ and not many miles, so yep, your scepticism is well founded indeedy [alas...]
So same old smoothrite/waxoyl system needed... kyaagh, progress eh?
